Instant Noodles: A Cultural Phenomenon

Instant noodles are a pantry staple for most people around the world: they’re a go-to easy and cheap meal that doesn’t particularly need much effort, so who’s to complain?! Everyone’s relationship with this easy dish is different for lots of reasons, but no matter how unique these relationships are, instant noodles are a cultural phenomenon.

Instant noodles are great because they can be enjoyed as is, or elevated with just a few simple ingredients! Eggs are a really popular add-in for any kind of instant noodle to include protein. Frozen peas also make for a healthy addition. Some add-ins, however, depend on cultural foods and flavor profiles! If you want the full ramen lover experience, eat the noodles with the seasoning straight from the bag!

There are a few major instant noodle products that are popular in different parts of the world.

The United States

An instant noodle brand that reaches most American people is Nissin with their classic Cup Noodles and Top Ramen. Their products are enjoyed by all types of people because they’re not spicy, but appeal to everyone! This brand of instant noodles is so characteristic of America as it appeals to the melting pot of cultures that exist here. This instant noodle is probably one of the best in being able to incorporate any add-in you could think of!

Indonesia and Africa

Indomie is a popular instant noodle brand in Indonesia, Nigeria and other African countries. Some of the noodle flavors are based on an Indonesian fried noodle dish called mie goreng. The Indomie distributed in African countries has a different flavor profile, but is a very popular street food and snack that most enjoy!

South Asia

Most people in some South Asian countries, and outside of this area, have a packet of Maggi noodles in their cupboard as a dependable meal substitute because of its nostalgic and familiar flavors. For example, the classic Masala flavor in India is unique  as it reflects this area’s cuisine in that it welcomes spices and additions characteristic of it. For example, the combination of green chilis, onion, ginger, and garlic (staples in Indian cooking) perfectly compliment the flavors of these noodles.

South Korea

Nongshim is a South Korean instant noodle company with a wide variety of products that feature the East Asian cuisine. Their popular Shin Ramyun flavor has become a Korean staple and a recognizable characteristic around the world.

There are so many more types of instant noodles, this article only skims the surface. This seemingly simple and often taken-for-granted dish ties the cultures of the world together! It’s clear that instant noodles are a cultural phenomenon!
