This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at NCSU chapter.

If you’re in college, you probably just finished final exams and are now free of all stressful studying and test taking for the year. However, if you didn’t graduate there’s going to be plenty more exams and stressful times in your college career ahead. To learn a quick and effective way to channel you stress for the future, read on.

You’ve probably seen Zentangle/Mandala coloring books in stores like Barnes & Noble and other various art and craft stores. These coloring books were one of the hottest Christmas gifts last season as they’re perfect for kids, teens, and adults alike.

I learned about Zentangle about four years ago, when it was just becoming popular. The company Zentangle sells kits to get people started and learn the art form. Once you learn a few patterns it’s easy to branch out and start creating your own. Here’s where the zen relaxation takes place.

Zentangle is essentially patterns consisting of lines, dots, and simple geometric shapes. Many have found that sitting down with a blank sheet of white paper, a black pen, and an open mind can create a piece of work that turns out really neat. But most importantly, it’s a nice break from studying, a busy schedule, and looking at your phone all day.

A good way to start is draw a box, divide it in four sections, and make up four patterns. As you get more comfortable with doodling, you can draw for longer periods of time and create new patterns quicker. Before you know it, you’ll have your own catalog of designs you’ve created.

After discovering Zentangle and finding it to be a form of mediation for me, I have enjoyed creating things like my high school’s senior t-shirt design, Mother’s day cards, etc.

So next time you’re feeling stressed, stop what you’re doing and find your inner zen by drawing a Zentangle piece. The repetitive motion may just calm you down and ease all your worries.

#SpoonTip: Incorporate a meaningful or motivational quote into your design. Totally Insta worthy.
