Your Guide to Dining at the University of Miami

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Miami chapter.

Rushing from class to a 2 p.m. meeting can be draining on an empty stomach and it’s important to make sure you’re eating nutritious meals and enough calories to get through that busy schedule. It’s easy to forget to make lunch during your day or realize the dining hall is already closed when you are on your way, so here is your guide to dining at the University of Miami.

The residential dining halls are the most convenient place to grab a quick bite if you have a meal plan and just want to roll out of bed or assemble a to-go meal before heading to class. The residential dining halls are all you can eat style and you just swipe your cane card to enter. The dining halls open at 7 a.m.  Monday through Friday. They close at 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Hecht-Stanford Dining Hall re-opens from 9:30 p.m. until 2 a.m. for late night dining Thursday through Saturday.

Not sure what you are craving? The food court has a variety of cuisines and vendors, but hours can be tricky since they all open and close at different times. Options include Sushi Maki, Burger 305, Subway, Tossed, Vicky Bakery and Pollo Tropical. The food court is also a social place as it is in a more central location on campus allowing for a quick bite in between classes or before a dip in the pool. Vicky Bakery opens at 7:30 a.m. and closes at 6 p.m. Subway is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Pollo Tropical and The Corner Deli, which is located in Outakes, are open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tossed is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Burger 305 is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The food court is closed on Saturday and Sunday. Outakes mini mart, the small store next to the food court, is open 24 hours all week. Outakes sells items like ice cream, chips and microwavable meals.

Want to dine with a great view? The Shalala Student Center, located next to the lake, is the social hub of campus as it is in the center of all action and has a number of dining options. Grab a sit down bite at The Rat or take out from Fresh Fusion. Starbucks opens at 7 a.m. and closes at midnight. Fresh Fusion opens at 11 a.m. and closes at 6 p.m. Jamba Juice is open from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Rat is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. While a few of these options are open during the weekend, Fresh Fushion and Jamba Juice are closed Saturdays and Sundays and the Rathskeller is closed on Sundays.

In the mood for a sit down meal? University of Miami offers a variety of options including Lime, Pura Vida and Einstein Bros Bagels. The retail options are also nice if you want to call something in before you go so it’s ready when you get there. Lime, which sells amazing burritos and tacos, is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Pura Vida‘s healthy bowls and smoothies can be purchased from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m on weekdays, but is closed Saturdays and Sundays. You can grab a bagel at Einsteins from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day except Saturday when they open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Snacks

Need something to tie you over for your two hour lecture? The food stands have the perfect snacks to do just that. The Half Moon stand at the School of Communication is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the location at Dooley Memorial is open until 6 p.m. The Half Moon stands are closed Saturdays and Sundays. A good snack option for if you are on the other side of campus is the Courtside Eatery at the Wellness Center, which is open from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. It is also closed on Sunday.

Although the dining hours can be confusing, campus is filled with great food options that can accommodate everyone. Just make sure you refer back here if you are unsure on hours, because nothing is worse than journeying all the way from the School of Communication to the dining hall just to be turned away.
