8 Actors You Didn’t Know Were Actually Drunk on Set

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Miami chapter.

For most people, having a drink after a long day at work is a very normal thing to do. But getting turnt on the job? Yeah, not so much. Then again, for most people work isn’t on a movie set, where they’re put in ridiculous, stressful, or sometimes uncomfortable situations. You’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do, and sometimes that means getting drunk.

Although all of the following celebrities have not confirmed each story, many news sources have validated them… so I’ll leave the decision up to you.

Anna Kendrick in “Drinking Buddies”

This one shouldn’t be a total surprise given the movie title, however, Anna claims it wasn’t intentional. During filming, the crew swapped her non-alcoholic beer with the real version without her initially noticing. She told Vulture in an interview, “I was pounding beer and I didn’t realize it was real until halfway through the take. I was like, I’m super drunk right now!

Shia LaBeouf in “Lawless”

If you know the premise of this movie, it also won’t be a surprise. In Lawless, Shia plays a bootlegger during prohibition. Naturally, to get in character he would often treat himself to some moonshine.

“I did it for the movie. I didn’t drink off set for no reason,” LeBeouf said to Page Six. “I did it because, when I showed up on set the next day, my [bleep]ing eyes looked like this and my face…had that drunk bloat that I needed, that I couldn’t have if that wasn’t going on.” If you’re trying to jump on the moonshine bandwagon, check out this recipe.

Margot Robbie in “The Wolf of Wall Street”

If your first on-camera sex scene was with Leonardo DiCaprio you’d 100 percent need a drink too. Apparently, Margot took three shots of tequila before filming to calm her nerves. Tequila was a wise choice, though, it has some health benefits, and it makes you feel confident AF. Tbh, I was pretty shocked to find out this was the only incident of drinking on set (that was publicized) given how insane the movie was.

Brad Pitt and Edward Norton in “Fight Club”

During downtime on set, director David Fincher saw Brad and Ed hitting golf balls into the catering truck after having a few drinks together. I guess his instincts to film the pair were correct because the scene ended up as one of the most iconic in the film.

Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis in “Black Swan”

According to director Darren Aronofsky, the two actors shared a bottle of tequila before filming the very talked about sex scene. Another on-set source told The Hollywood Reporter it “got everyone relaxed.” Similar to Margot Robie, they weren’t trying to get drunk, they just wanted to lessen their nerves. Mila denied these claims, so I’ll leave this one for you to decide.

Jennifer Lawrence in “Catching Fire”

You may have been on the edge of your seat during Catching Fire, but Jennifer was somewhere closer to our drinking game. She said in a Google Hangout Fan Q&A that she and the cast got drunk together during filming, and in an interview with David Letterman, she said she’d sit in her trailer and drink piña coladas when she was bored.

Daniel Radcliffe in “Harry Potter”

Yes, even Harry himself was drunk on set. Not intentionally, but he would often show up still drunk from the night before. He has been quoted saying, “I went into work still drunk. I can point to many scenes where I’m just gone. Dead behind the eyes. I have a very addictive personality. It was a problem.” Side note: imagine trying to cast a spell drunk, I couldn’t even do that sober.

Julie Andrews in “The Sound of Music”

I kid you not, there are reports of Julie Andrews turning up on The Sound of Music set. You obviously remember the Do-Re-Mi scene in the Alps, right? Well apparently, the farmer that owned the land brewed his own schnapps and Julie would frequently take shots while she practiced her guitar. I knew no one could be that enthusiastic without some assistance…
