8 Foods You Should Be Eating For Stronger Hair and Nails

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Marist chapter.

It is no secret that the winter can leave you feeling warn out. The stress of classes, jobs, and the unpredictable weather can wreak havoc on our skin, hair, and nails. Winter weather often allows for both hair and nails to become thin and brittle, while skin can become dry and oily if not taken care of properly.

Refresh yourself this spring with a few surprising foods that will have your locks looking luscious and ready to flow in that summer breeze.

1. Walnuts and Almonds

Fresh nuts are an awesome source of protein, which is an important element for good skin, hair and nails. They are also a great healthy snack for those of us struggling to shape up our hot summer bods.

2. Blueberries

Antioxidants give a healthy boost to your entire body. Though they are an easy way to both prevent cell damage to both hair and nails, they are also known to help give snackers a radiant complexion.

3. Beer

Say what? Yes—beer can actually help strengthen your hair, thanks to its silicon content. Silicon helps generate circulation in the scalp, which allows for the growth of super strong, healthy and shiny hair. Maybe all of those embarrassing beer-fueled frat party moments were worth it, after all.

4. Eggs

Eggs are a cheap and substantial source of protein, making them a staple in the typical college diet. However, they also have biotin, which is a vitamin often infused in over-priced hair treatments to help repair hair damage. This is your excuse to slobber over that hangover cure of an egg sandwich.

5. Salmon

Salmon is also a strong source of biotin, along with omega-3 fatty acids and protein. This powerful combo promotes radiant skin, shiny hair and a healthier scalp.

6. Spinach

Iron deficiency causes brittle hair and chipping nails. Spinach is an iron powerhouse, but it also has folate and vitamin C that helps promote the natural production of healthy hair oils. (Pro tip: chop up spinach and cook up an omelet with diced tomatoes. Can you say no regrets?).

7. Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are not only a great way to kick-start a healthier diet, but they also have antioxidants that serve as an easy way to get stronger hair and nails along with clear skin. Yum…

8. Red Meat

When eaten in moderation, red meat can be a perfect source of iron. B vitamins, zinc, and iron all allow for stronger, healthier, shinier and faster hair growth. Go ahead–get that burger every once in a while. Maybe eat it with some kickass sweet potato fries.
