Baltimore’s 6 Best Ice Cream Shops

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at LUM chapter.

Baltimore is known for crabs, Natty Boh, and more crabs. But what if you’re in the mood for dessert? What then? Well, luckily for you, we took matter into our own hands and decided to try a few of Baltimore’s ice cream parlors.

A lot of ice cream and 700 pounds later, we narrowed down Baltimore’s best.

1. The Charmery

Located in the hipster village of Hampden, The Charmery serves up homemade, Maryland-inspired ice cream. Their menu features some weird yet delicious ice cream flavors that range from Berger Cookies & Cream to Old Bay Caramel.

If you’re craving something more tame, then go straight for the Maryland Mud (chocolate ice cream with chocolate chips & Oreos), Coffee by Spro, or my personal favorite, Malty Vanilla Chip.

No matter what you choose, you’ll be sure to enjoy it.

2. Uncle Wiggly’s

Not only does Uncle Wiggly’s serve delicious and classic flavors, such as cookie dough and mint chocolate chip, but they also supply Baltimore’s very own Takahara Brothers ice cream. Key lime pie, Berger cookie, and blueberry jasmine are just a few of their mouthwatering flavors.

Uncle Wiggly’s is right down York Road, so you have no reason not to visit.

3. Pitango Gelato

While Pitango Gelato’s flavors are more classic and tame, that doesn’t mean their quality is any less. This healthier alternative to ice cream is creamy and delicious, and will no doubt have you coming back for more.

Located in Fell’s Point, you can enjoy your tasty treat all while overlooking the gorgeous waterfront. Gelato with a view, does it get any better than that?

4. Dominion Ice Cream

Who says ice cream can’t be healthy? Not only is Dominion Ice Cream a short walk away, right across from Johns Hopkins University (yay for exercise!), but they also include vegetable ice cream options on their menu.

Their funky flavors include Muscle Up (spinach ice cream), sweet potato, beet, and sweet corn. Don’t worry, the vegetable taste is hidden or, at most, very subtle. If you’re still worried about eating weird flavors, Dominion offers traditional tastes too.

Take a quick trip and try it out. You won’t be disappointed.

5. Afters Café

This modern, family-friendly froyo shop serves up six delicious flavors and a LOT of toppings. (49 different types to be exact) If froyo isn’t your thing, don’t panic. Afters Café also offers coffee and pastries.

With this many options everyone is sure to find something they enjoy.

6. Miss Twist Ice Cream

Who said ice cream trucks are only for little kids? Bring back your childhood with Miss Twist Ice Cream. They may not have your Spongebob popsicles, but they do have amazing soft-serve ice cream cones, floats, shakes, and sundaes.

While Miss Twist doesn’t have a storefront, they frequently update their location frequently. So go track down that truck & get a delicious frozen treat.
