A Definitive Ranking of The GFB Bites

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at LUC chapter.

When I finally decided to buy GFB bites, I was shopping at Jewel Osco. I had seen this brand before in multiple stores and cafes but never really thought to buy it. After doing a bit of research, I became interested and decided to give GFB a try. The GFB — Gluten-Free Bars — was started by brothers, Marshall and Elliott Rader, in 2010 with a mission to provide healthy and nutritious gluten-free snack. All GFB products are gluten-free, soy-free, non-GMO, vegan, kosher, and contain simple ingredients — nuts, seeds, plant-based proteins, and dried fruits. GFB sells six varieties of bites- PB&J, Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter, Chocolate Cherry Almond, Coconut Cashew Crunch, Dark Chocolate Coconut, and Dark Chocolate Hazelnut.

I tried to get my hands on all the flavors of gluten-free bites so that I could rank them from worst to best, solely based on taste. Sadly, I was not able to find the Dark Chocolate Coconut Bites so they are not included in this ranking.

5. PB&J Bites

PB&J is a classic food combo but the flavors didn’t really shine through in these bites. The smell of peanuts and sweet jelly hit me right away when I opened the bag but, when it came to flavor, I couldn’t really taste any of the J in this PB&J even though there were specks of dried cranberries and cherries throughout each bite. All I tasted were peanuts, not even peanut butter, just plain peanuts.

4. Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Bites

I am not a fan of peanut butter and chocolate so right off the bat I thought these would be in fifth place. Expect there weren’t any peanut butter throughout the bite, no swirls, no chips, no nothing. It was just a simple chocolate bite covered in peanuts. The Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Bite wasn’t bad, just doesn’t live up to its name, and a bite plain if you ask me.

3. Dark Chocolate Hazelnut Bites

The minute I read Dark Chocolate Hazelnut I thought of nutella. Not being a huge fan of nutella, I was kind of glad these bites didn’t taste like it. Instead, they were very similar to the Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Bites, only coated in hazelnuts, instead of peanuts, and contained sunflower seeds inside that gave it a nice texture.

2. Chocolate Cherry Almond Bites

I thought this one would be my favorite one. Seriously, the combination of chocolate, cherries, and almonds has got to one of the best food combos out there. Yet, they didn’t meet my expectations. The chocolate over powered the taste of cherries and the fruitiness was only present as an aftertaste.

1. Coconut Cashew Crunch Bites

Even to my surprise, these were my favorite. I am not usually a big fan of coconut but it was a nice change to all the chocolate. The Coconut Cashew Crunch Bites were bit sweeter than the those ones. Nevertheless, they had a distinct and different taste, which is probably why I liked liked them the most.

Overall, I was a bit disappointed with the GFB bites. Maybe it is because I set my expectation too high or my tastebuds aren’t as refined and sophisticated to taste the subtle flavors in each bite. Nevertheless, here is my ranking and if you ask me, I would still must rather eat these bites instead of a candy bar. Okay, okay, more like I would rather eat the Coconut Cashew Cluster Bites instead of a candy bar because that flavor was actually pretty good.
