Danny Meyer is back at it again with his brigade of successful and intriguing restaurants, along with dream team Executive Chef Michael Anthony and Chef de Cuisine Suzanne Cupps.
Mike has led another Union Square Hospitality Group restaurant, Gramercy Tavern, to a three-star New York Times review in 2007 and again in August of 2016, a James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurant in 2008, and a personal James Beard Award for Outstanding Chef in 2015. The ambitious chef is about to take Untitled to the next level, and here’s why.
Location
Located on 99 Gansevoort Street, in Renzo Piano’s downtown Whitney Museum, Untitled is directly in the heart of New York’s Meatpacking District. Have a look at the artwork, stop in at Studio Cafe on the 8th floor for a little snack, and dine at Untitled for lunch or dinner.
Gansevoort Street itself is filled with shops, pop-up galleries, and an entrance to the High Line—where you can walk along 1.45 miles of an ex-NY railroad spur/elevated public park filled with sculptures and botany. After being inspired by your hyper-seasonal and contemporary American meal, head over to Chelsea Market on 9th Ave to indulge in the food culture. My suggestion: Dizengoff for the hummus and pita.
Restaurant Design
As if the artwork in the Whitney wouldn’t already absolutely blow your mind, Untitled is a piece of art on its own, whether you enter from the museum or the street entrance. Unlike most trendy downtown restaurants, you can actually see the line cooks preparing your meal right in front of you from the indoor seating.
However, if eating under the sun is more you’re thing, have a seat on the outdoor patio and admire the views while you dine. Upon a first glance before even entering the restaurant, the cherry-red Saarinen chairs may catch your eye through the high paneled glass wall facing Gansevoort Street, and as you enter, you’ll see my personal favorite, the giant ‘Eat’ sign featured above the bar. After all, that is what you’re there to do right?
Coffee Service
Too early for the museum? Didn’t get enough sleep last night before work? Head over to Untitled for coffee service, Monday through Friday starting at 9am at the bar and ending at 11:30 am. Check out the Untitled Blend, or a Hairbender espresso on-the-go.
Lunch Service
What better way to eat lunch, than in a gorgeous dining room, filled with natural light and a view of Gansevoort Street?! Answer: There is no better way. Whether you’re visiting The Whitney Museum or checking out The Museum of Ice Cream, the restaurant is accessible from both The Whitney lobby and the street level.
Dinner Service
Sit in the restaurant, or sit along the line – just make sure you sit somewhere. Untitled’s dinner menu is slightly more expansive than the lunch menu, and features a braised lamb entree, country rib, and a pasta dish. No matter what you order, you’ll be biting into your own personal plate of exciting, seasonal American cooking.
The Burger
The Untitled Burger has officially arrived, and it’s here to steal the show. This all-beef plancha-seared patty is served on a toasted brioche bun with lettuce, a thick cut beefsteak tomato slice, and cherry bomb pimento cheese. On the side, you’ll find garlic aioli, yellow-chile hot sauce, fried smashed butterball potatoes, and pickled romano beans. The burger is found on the menu every day for lunch, and all day Friday.
Open Kitchen at Untitled
So what exactly is an Open Kitchen at Untitled? It’s a dinner series featuring outside local chefs, winemakers, and farmers. Yeah, that’s right, you can dine in this amazing restaurant AND have the option to taste three different feature dishes from the visiting chefs.
Past chef dinners have included Jamie Bissonnette of Toro NYC, Jonathan Waxman of Barbuto NYC, and Jessi Singh of Babu Ji NYC. When it comes to Farmer Dinners, stop in for a 4 course menu with wine pairings, for just $85. Reservations can be made at 212-570-3670. Check out these upcoming farmer dinners;
November 2nd: Rise and Root Farm
November 9th: Alewife Farm
November 16th: Campo Russo Farm
Stay tuned for other events here.
Neighbor’s Night
Every Sunday through Tuesday night, you can stop in at Untitled for the special Neighbor’s Night snack menu. Neighbor’s Night is “a way to connect with new guests, reconnect with old ones, and to celebrate NY state food and wine at a fun and affordable price,” according to Sous Chef Tracy Malechek. The menu features a fried fish lettuce wrap, beef tartare, and snapper ceviche.
Bread Service
Untitled starts your meal off right – with miniature baked cheddar biscuits. They’re served in bread boxes, with a side of house-made red pepper jam. Need a refill? They’ve got you. The biscuits are not gluten-free, however, gluten-free bread is available with butter or olive oil if you ask your server.
The Dessert Menu
Pastry Chef Miro Uskokovic definitely took his own personal artwork to a whole new level when he designed the Untitled dessert plates. Featured above is a lemon meringue tart garnished with white chocolate chunks, toasted pecans, and lemon marmalade. Also on the menu is an olive oil cake with poached pears, ricotta, and pistachios, matcha cake with strawberries and almond sesame brittle, caramelized cheesecake with raspberries and honeycomb brittle, and devil’s food cake with chocolate ganache and concord grapes.
But my personal favorite is the caramelized cheesecake. If you’re not super into the sweet-tooth desserts, check out the cheese plate, which consists of a Manchester cheese, Walton Umber cheese, and an “Ewe Calf to Be Kidding Me” blend. The cheese plate is served with bread rolls, and gluten free option is available.
The Cookies
Who would’ve thought a gluten-free cookie could taste so good?! Served straight out of the oven, with a little straw and milk jar, this $8 dessert is the perfect example of American style food that Untitled promises. If you can’t dine in, don’t worry, the cookies are offered to go at the bar.
So, what’s the secret behind these bad boys? The cookies are made with brown butter, and the combination of three types of Guittard chocolate – 72% dark, 38% milk, and 31% white chocolate. The cookies are baked at 375 degrees and then topped with a pinch of Amagansett salt in the middle. Whether you follow a gluten-free diet or not, this cookie will absolutely blow your mind.
Untitled is the next big thing in the restaurant world of New York City. From the moment you walk in and order your homemade root beer soda, until the minute that last bite of cookie drops to your stomach, both the restaurant design itself and the Untitled kitchen and crew are hard at work to please all of your senses and provide you with the utmost dining experience. If you haven’t already made your reservation, get to it.
