Hampden’s Latest: Center Cut Doughnuts

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at JHU chapter.

Located in a small brick-front row house in Hampden, a hipster neighborhood of Baltimore known for great restaurants, stands the brand new Center Cut Doughnuts. On January 12th, this trendy donut shop was officially up and running after changing ownership from the previously beloved B. Doughnut.

If you were a diehard B. Doughnut fan devastated to hear it had closed, don’t fret, because Center Cut does not disappoint. Although the style and vibe of Center Cut differs from the old place, the unique quality and ever-changing menu will keep you coming back for more.

Josh Kowitz, the owner of Center Cut, says that he gets bored easily and is always experimenting in the kitchen to create new options, ensuring the menu is never the same from one day to another. Moreover, Josh is the self-proclaimed inventor of the challahnut, a donut made from deep frying the classic Jewish bread dough. Mind-blowing.

Along with a selection of regular donuts, there is always an array of creative flavors for all of your whimsical tastes. Featured below is the Chocolate Espresso Challahnut.

In my opinion, the best part about this place is the selection of frostings and toppings. Each one I tried was melt-in-your-mouth rich and flavorful, though not overwhelming. The black & white, featuring half and half of their two most popular flavors, is a particular star. Burnt butter frosting on one side with chocolate on the other. Not to be cliché, but it’s most definitely the best of both…donuts.

The dedication to trying new things in the back of the bakery is what makes this place stand out. After two seasons at the Hampden farmer’s market, Josh decided to make the move to a solidified location. Luckily, a lot of B. Doughnut’s previous customer base has shifter their loyalties with the switch.

So whether you’ve been to the old place or not, the next time you’re in the mood for a sweet treat, Center Cut is the place to go.

Check their Facebook page here for photos, videos and updates on their latest flavor combo creations.
