I Tried BistroMD For A Week And This Is What Happened

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Hofstra chapter.

Over the past few months, I’ve been eating the same foods for every meal with little variation. You might be asking, why don’t you just cook something? Well, here’s the truth. I’m not a cook by any stretch of the imagination and I don’t enjoy following recipes. I’m not sure about you, but frozen meals have become my best friend during this quarantine. Not only are frozen meals easy to prepare, but they also have a long shelf life which is great for these hard times. Earlier this month, bistroMD reached out to me and asked if I was interested in trying out their meals for a week and of course I agreed. I’m always looking for pre-made frozen food meals that are healthy and easy to make.

While bistroMD markets itself as a weight loss meal service, I didn’t use the meals in that capacity. I’ve struggled with weight for most of my life and I’m currently in a mental state where I am finally content with my exercise and diet regimen. However, I know these type of pre-made plans work wonders for people who can’t find the time to cook the healthy and nutritious meals their bodies need, so this might be a perfect fit for you

What Is bistroMD?

BistroMD is a subscription service that provides gourmet meals that are specifically designed for weight loss. Each meal is low in carbohydrates, high in protein, and under 400 calories. There are over 150 meal options to choose from from pasta and chicken to eggplant and fish.

How It Works

To get started, all you need to do is pick a plan that aligns with your dietary preferences and schedule. There are plans for both men and women and those interested in heart healthy, gluten-free, diabetic and menopause friendly meals.

To find out which plan is right for you, check out their website for more details.

What I Ate During The Week

I’m going to be honest. I was a bit skeptical about trying food meant for weight loss because I thought the portions were going to be too small. As someone who wasn’t trying this service for weight loss, I still wanted to be satisfied which I was. I found that the portions were just the right size and the pairings worked well together.

I received 5 lunches and 5 dinners consisting of mostly chicken and pasta because that is what I prefer to eat. Some of the dishes I tried included: Sweet and Sour Chicken Meatballs, Stuffed Shells with Vodka Marinara, Hickory Smoked BBQ Beef with Yukon Gold Potatoes, Grilled Salmon and Creamy Pesto, Eggplant Lasagna Casserole, Thai Peanut Chicken with Sugar Snap Peas, Tuna Noodle Casserole and Broccoli Cheddar Stuffed Chicken.

The Broccoli Cheddar Stuffed Chicken was the first meal I tried and probably my favorite. I love chicken and cheese so I had a feeling this one was going to be delicious. The chicken was really juicy and the vegetables on the side paired perfectly. I’m usually not a fan of carrots, but I thought they were cooked just right. My favorite part was that the entire meal took less than 10 minutes to complete.

My only real complaint was that I had to heat the chicken a bit longer than instructed, but that is really more of a personal matter with my microwave.

These stuffed shells were creamy and delicious. The filling was thick and it was just perfect. I didn’t like the sauce as it was a little too textured for my liking, but I just ended up pushing it off. I was surprised about how much pasta I was able to eat for under 400 calories and still be satisfied.

The other meals I tried were tasty and satisfying. I really don’t think you can go wrong because there are so many options to choose from for people with all tastes. I didn’t leave my meals out to thaw prior to microwaving them, so I found some to be a little watery, so I’d suggest leaving them out and draining before hand for optimal results.

Overall Thoughts

I really enjoyed trying bistroMD for the week. As a health conscious college student, eating healthy can sometimes be a struggle, especially now while stuck at home in quarantine. I’d definitely recommend this service to people looking for quick and delicious pre-made food or those who want to enjoy their favorite dishes without having to worry about calories.

I think investing in your health is one of the most worthwhile things that you can do for yourself, so you might as well nourish your body with the fuel it needs.
