Add Some Protein to your PWO Oats for Some Extra Gains

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Hamilton chapter.

Oatmeal is a great source of nutrients and is extremely quick and easy to make. They are a great source of carbohydrates, healthy fats, and protein. I love having a nice bowl of oats after a workout. In order to amp up the amount of protein, which is 5g for 1/2 cup of dry oats, I like to add in some protein-rich mix-ins.

Egg whites

An egg is packed with essential macromolecules: the whites contain a good amount of protein and the yolk is filled with healthy fats. Adding egg whites to oatmeal not only adds protein, but it also increases the volume of the oats, which will leave you fuller for longer. Make sure to cook the egg whites completely because consuming raw eggs and egg whites could lead to salmonella

Milk

Containing both healthy fats and protein, milk is an easy addition to oatmeal. Simply pour your choice of milk into the bowl with the uncooked oats and make sure that all of the oats are soaked in liquid.

Meat

I know this one sounds weird, but if you are feeling a savory bowl of oats meat is a great addition. For instance, add in some sausage, an egg, and cheese or hummus for a delicious meal.

Protein Powder

Probably one of the easiest, if not the easiest, way to add protein to your oatmeal. Simply add in a scoop of your favorite protein powder to your oats, either before cooking or after cooking them, and voila!

Protein PB

I absolutely love peanut butter and it is a phenomenal addition to oatmeal. If you’re feeling traditional, regular peanut butter will surely do the trick. I like to use Teddie’s Smooth All Natural Peanut Butter #teamsmooth. Some great protein nut butters include Ds Naturals Fluffbutter and PB2 powdered peanut butter.

Oatmeal is a quick and easy meal to make and contains numerous health benefits. It is also extremely versatile and can be made at really any mealtime. Mix up your creations to make some oat of this world bowls of oatmeal! Sorry, I had to do it :).
