After a rigorous day of classes, a rough test, or a long shift at work, I frequently find myself searching for a nighttime sweet treat when I return home. If you’re anything like me, finding a dessert with more complexity than a prepackaged candy bar without the time commitment of a homemade recipe can be challenging. A middle ground that’s both quick and heart-warming can be so deliciously satisfying, and Sweet Loren’s can easily fill this role. Sweet Loren’s is a cookie dough brand that has branched into breakfast biscuits, puff pastry dough, and even thin-crust pizza. It’s sold in grocery stores nationwide and values clean ingredients without allergens, dairy, or gluten. Even better, it’s safe to eat as raw cookie dough! Here’s a ranking of some of Sweet Loren’s cookie dough flavors in both edible dough and cookie form, as well as their breakfast biscuits.
Cookie Dough
1. Pumpkin Spice
This Pumpkin Spice cookie dough flavor was the overall best out of the group of cookies. The dough is incredibly flavorful with strong cinnamon, pumpkin, and nutmeg notes. The raw dough smells like a pumpkin cake and can be thoroughly enjoyed on its own. When baked, the cookie’s spices become more prominent and envelop the room with a smell reminiscent of autumn. The dough itself does not have any add-ins, but the simplicity of the cookie truly lets the pumpkin flavor shine. I recommend picking up this seasonal cookie for a cozy night with a warm drink and some tasteful fuzzy socks.
2. Fudgy Brownie
I am not a big fan of double chocolate chip cookies, but this flavor is phenomenal. Fudgy Brownie was the best flavor to be eaten as cookie dough because of its rich, dark chocolate flavor that was not overwhelmingly sweet. The dough tastes close to a smooth brownie batter with occasional melty chocolate chips to add complexity to the texture. The cookie was very fudgy when baked, with a center that remained soft and chocolatey even after it cooled. The bake times on the packaging are flexible. Sticking to a lower bake time will keep the cookie on the fudgier side while baking it a bit longer will crisp it up to pair nicely with a glass of milk. This flavor is not seasonal and is an item that should always be on the grocery radar for its versatility and richness.
3. Chocolate Chunk
Sweet Loren’s interpretation of Chocolate Chip matches well with the classic crispy yet chewy chocolate chip cookie. Chocolate Chunk is a reliable cookie that can be easily manipulated for other innovations, such as an ice cream sandwich or monster cookie. The dough has a smooth, thick consistency with highlights of vanilla and salt that balance well with the melty chocolate chips. When baked, the cookie has a satisfactory dough-to-chip ratio and maintains its height a bit more than the other cookie dough flavors that I tested. Overall, Chocolate Chunk is a solid flavor that can provide the nostalgic feeling of a home-baked chocolate chip cookie and should be a fridge staple. It can be enjoyed independently or elevated by adding other sweet and salty inclusions to give the cookie more complexity.
4. Less Sugar Chocolate Chunk
Considering that this cookie dough has no allergens, gluten, or dairy, and it has less sugar than the original Chocolate Chunk, it does its’ job well. The cookie dough is very light and emphasizes the vanilla flavor of the dough, but it could use some more chocolate chips. This dough is not as filling as the other flavors so it can be more easily enjoyed without using an oven. Once baked, the dough loses a bit of intricacy, but the cookie itself is still a solid chocolate chip option. However, the texture of this cookie dough is grainier than the rest of the flavors, and this texture persists after being baked. The cookie crumbles apart easily and loses some of the dimension from its raw form. If you are searching for a low-sugar option for the classic chocolate chip cookie, this flavor gets pretty close to the quality of the original Sweet Loren’s Chocolate Chunk. However, if this product is not what you are looking for, I would recommend stocking up on the other flavors for a more well-rounded cookie.
Breakfast Biscuits
1. Cinnamon Sugar
Cinnamon Sugar is the best breakfast biscuit out of the three that have been released by Sweet Loren’s thus far. The biscuit has the perfect ratio of sweet and spiced goodness without being too sugary for an early morning or as a snack. This breakfast biscuit smells very similar to a warm cinnamon roll and tastes like a delicious graham cracker with notes of cinnamon and nutmeg. When on the go, the Cinnamon Sugar breakfast biscuits serve as an easy pick-me-up, and the flavor profile blends well with coffee or tea. I highly recommend picking these up to help make a heartwarming but quick breakfast more accessible.
2. Chocolate
If you are a chocolate lover, the Chocolate breakfast biscuit is for you! This biscuit has a rich, nutty, dark chocolate flavor that is more sophisticated than the average chocolate breakfast bar or cookie. The biscuit is a bit more crumbly than the other two, similar to the consistency of a chocolate and cream sandwich cookie. Having this biscuit in the snack stash would add depth to those mornings when you want a sweeter, chocolatey treat that is a good source of fiber and protein. The Chocolate breakfast biscuit could also be crumbled over a bowl of fruit or oatmeal to add complexity and texture.
3. Blueberry
The Blueberry breakfast biscuit is the lightest in flavor out of the three options. The biscuit itself has a vanilla smell and taste, and the notes of blueberry were a bit faint. This biscuit is not as sweet and flavorful as the other biscuits in the line, but it could be used to elevate other breakfast dishes or snacks. The vanilla notes of the Blueberry biscuit, like the Cinnamon biscuit, also pair well with a warm morning coffee. The Blueberry breakfast biscuit makes a light and easy breakfast, or perhaps a creative alternative to granola. However, if you are searching for a more robust option from Sweet Loren’s line, I would recommend stocking up on the Chocolate and Cinnamon biscuits first.
Overall, I was thoroughly impressed by Sweet Loren’s cookie dough and breakfast biscuit lineup. The consideration behind the products speaks for itself, and it is clear that the company cares about using real ingredients. Each of the products I tasted was uniquely delicious and provided a dessert experience that felt heart-warming without requiring much preparation or baking time. Of the products reviewed, the most impressive options were Sweet Loren’s Pumpkin Spice and Fudgy Brownie cookie doughs as well as the Cinnamon and Chocolate breakfast biscuits. However, despite visiting several different grocery stores, I could not find all the cookie dough flavors. Sweet Loren’s also has to offer Chocolate Mint, Gingerbread, Salted Caramel Cookie, Oatmeal Cranberry, Lemon, Chocolate Lover’s, and Sugar cookie dough. I will be keeping my eye out for the rest of the cookies and look forward to trying them.
