With the ever changing food options on campus, it’s hard to keep track of what’s gone, what’s new––and most importantly, what’s good. If you’re wondering what replaced Taco Bell on campus and craving some delicious sushi, look no further then Akeno Sushi.
While this hip Japanese restaurant is new to Mason’s campus in Fall 2017, Akeno Sushi has been on Mason’s campus for a while. You might recognize their colorful rolls as the same sushi sold at the different convenience stores around campus. Akeno Sushi also has a brick-and-mortar restaurant in Annandale that offers a larger selection of sushi and party platters.
So what can I get from Akeno Sushi when I’ve got a full day of classes and need energy for the day? Good news: they’ve got some delicious grub. Mason students recommend going for the more simple offerings, like the salmon nigiri and tuna roll. They even offer vegetarian sushi; the California roll is recommended as the best on the menu.
As a bonus, they also sell udon and ramen for anyone craving hot soup packed full with umami flavor. Bowls come topped with green onions, sprouts, a soft-boiled egg, cabbage, mushrooms, radishes, carrots, chicken, or even shrimp tempura––depending on which you order. They’re the perfect pick-me-up now that the weather is getting cold and the campus flu is starting to go around.
Oh, and if you’re not feeling sushi or soup? No worries, Akeno Sushi also offers orange chicken good enough to rival Panda’s. Plus, they have several different types of teas, including ice and hot tea, milk tea, and even bubble tea! The green tea bubbles come highly recommended, as do the sugary passionfruit. Next time you’re craving orange chicken and bubble tea, Akeno Sushi is the place on campus for you.
The area around Akeno Sushi in SUB I has been renovated, and has a very chic and clean look. Waiting in line doesn’t take too long, and you get your food in a reasonably quick amount of time. Akeno Sushi accepts meal plans, cash, credit cards, and Mason Money, and the prices are comparable to other on-campus venues.
Like Chik-fil-a and Taco Bell before them, Akeno Sushi is open Monday-Thursday 11am-5pm, Friday 11am-3pm, and closed on Saturdays and Sundays. If you’re in the mood for something new in-between classes, are craving sushi, or just need some ramen to chase away the sniffles, then try Akeno Sushi! This campus newcomer is sure to leave you (and your stomach) happy.
