The Reinvention of Dessert is Happening at The Humble Bee Shoppe

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at FSU chapter.

Most people grow up eating chocolate chip cookies and brownies, and have that sense of home attached to it, because it was an after-school snack or eaten at your grandma’s house on weekends. The Humble Bee Shoppe in Winston Salem, NC is bringing back that nostalgic feeling with a twist. The business’ outlook is to reinvent the cookie with organic flavors and ingredients like cocoa nibs, turmeric black sesame seeds, etc. and creating desserts with care.

The Reinvention of the Cookie

Brittany McGee, owner of The Humble Bee Shoppe grew up in Miami, FL and was influenced by Cuban restaurants and home-style cooking from her Italian family. The Humble Bee Shoppe started by selling out of cookies in just two hours one night at Bull’s Tavern, and evolved into a crafty delivery/catering business in a shared storefront. Now, she will be opening her own store this spring.

Fresh Ingredients

The Humble Bee gives you nothing less than organic and whole ingredients enriched in your desserts. McGee believes food should be made with love and integrity, and not just for profit. No food is ever pre-made and she customizes orders so the dessert is special and not a typical cake you eat at other bakeries. Here are some of her unique desserts.

Chocolate Raspberry Cake

This is a double layered chocolate cake with raspberry and ranunculus on top, basically making it the most beautiful cake out there. Yes, it tastes just as good as it looks.

Fruit Galette

Galette is a term used in French cuisine to describe a crusty cake. It’s made with nectarine and raspberry citrus with a flaky crust. We all know crust needs to be on point and this galette does the trick.

Dark Chocolate Cake

This dark chocolate cake is filled with fresh raspberries, silky chocolate ganache, and espresso buttercream. As if it didn’t have enough flavor, there’s dark chocolate covered espresso beans, topped with more chocolate and edible gold luster/leaf for the ultimate cake finale.

Dessert Platter

This platter consists of white chocolate almond cookies, macaroons, and Day Porter brownies. This gives you a palate of variety in the flavor and type of dessert.

Chocolate Chip Cookies

The chocolate chip cookies are salted and made with organic cocoa nib, tasting like a traditional chocolate chip cookie but enhanced by that special ingredient.

Chocolate Olive Oil Cake

Have you ever heard of a cake made with olive oil? If not, you need to try it. This chocolate cake is made with olive oil, chocolate buttercream, chocolate ganache, candied cocoa nib, chocolate honeycomb, pistachio and fresh raspberries. McGee likes to make the cake be a work of art in itself.

Dirty Blondes

The shop always incorporates innovative flavors, so the dirty blondes consist of rich chocolate, coconut, toasted almonds, ganache, and organic cocoa nibs.

Raspberry Macaroons

These macaroons are made with raspberry buttercream and dried raspberries. This is a refreshing snack during the spring and summer.

With every bite, these desserts fulfill that nostalgic feeling of home. Eating locally with whole ingredients and dessert that’s made with integrity feels like a craft within itself. The reinvention of dessert is happening and it’s at The Humble Bee Shoppe.
