As the cold air starts to invade campus, it seems as if more people start coughing, sneezing, and complaining about sore throats. That is when I use tea as a herbal remedy because of the ability of different herbs to combat sickness symptoms. These perfect teas will be sure to cure any aches and pains that lurk around this time of year.
1. Chamomile Tea
Chamomile tea has oils that calm stomach muscles which can relieve stomach pain. Chamomile is also great for nights when you can’t seem to fall asleep. The tea’s warmth and mild flavor promotes a healthy sleep cycle as well as relaxing your nervous system.
2. Peppermint
Peppermint tea is best for indigestion pain, gas, nausea, and vomiting because it improves bile movement. The peppermint flavor seems to sooth your stomach as well as period cramps or spasms. However, it is not advised to drink other mint teas when your stomach hurts because they do not have the same chemical properties.
3. Ginger
Ginger tea stimulates the digestive system which helps with a nausea induced stomach ache. It also promotes absorption in the intestines which allows the body to obtain extra nutrients from the foods you’ll most likely be eating this holiday season.
4. Mint
Mint tea is an awesome herbal remedy for when you have a cold or flu. The properties in mint tea induce sweating which breaks a fever. It also mimics an expectorant which relieves congestion. Mint is great for those of you with terrible allergies (myself included). The same anti-inflammatory agent that relieves congestion also helps seasonal allergy symptoms.
5. Lemon Balm
Feeling stressed about finals? Grab a cup of lemon balm tea. Lemon balm calms down nervousness which results in a sleepy feeling. It slows your heart rate down which makes you feel more relaxed. This tea is most effective when consumed before bed.
Tea is a great natural and herbal remedy that is used to fight the winter snuffles. It is recommended that you drink anywhere from two to six cups a day to ensure you are in tip top health for the holidays. Happy brewing!
