One of the best parts of studying at Emory University is being able to try all the different restaurants in Atlanta. Atlanta has such a vast and dynamic food scene. There all types of cuisines and restaurants. With food halls (Ponce City Market & Krog Street Market), local pizzerias (Antico’s), healthy dining (True Food Kitchen), ice cream shops (Butter & Cream), and brunch (Sun in my Belly), there is always somewhere to go and eat something delish. Although there are the classic spots that have been around for years, a few new restaurants have recently opened in Atlanta.
1. Upbeet
Upbeet has been the new hit spot since we got back to school in August. Although it’s a little far from campus, it is definitely worth making the trip. They have a ton of healthy options and they use fresh/sustainable produce. There are different options to chose from grain bowls, salads, smoothie bowls, toasts, to lattes, there is something for everyone. With its trendy decor and vibes you will feel like you are in California.
2. Poké Perfect
Poké Perfect recently opened in Decatur. While they have signature bowls you can already pick from, you can also build your own. What is great about Poké Perfect is that they have a huge selection of toppings you can pick from. Poké Perfect is a great option if you are looking for something quick and delicious
3. Wagaya
A Japanese place was just what was missing from Emory Village. Nothing beats being able to walk to dinner and not worry about the hassle of Uber. Wagaya has a large menu that ranges from sushi to ramen so almost anyone can find something they’ll like. The place is always busy but the wait usually isn’t too long. Although it isn’t the best sushi in Atlanta, it is worth going to; the prices are reasonable, the service is great, and it is close to campus.
4. Bar Mercado
Bar Mercado is a full-service restaurant in Krog Street Market that serves Spanish food, tapas style. Bar Mercado has cool vibes with fun and colorful decor. The food is aesthetically pleasing and it tastes as good as it looks. PLUS for brunch you can get bottomless mimosas, sangria, or Bloody Mary’s for $15 (If that doesn’t give you a reason to go I don’t know what will).
5. The Roast
The Roast is a restaurant created by Whole Foods that serves fast-casual Brazilian style food. It is one of the few restaurants that Whole Foods has opened in the U.S. and it does not disappoint. Once you arrive at the restaurant, you order at the counter and create your own bowl. The bowl includes a protein, sautéed vegetables, and grains. What’s really cool is how the ingredients for your dish are sautéed in front of you which means you don’t have to worry about your food being cold. The sauces and style of the food served are different from any other fast-casual restaurant I have been to. They also serve wine and other beverages and have pool tables in the back.
Next time you’re looking for where to eat just head over to one of these new restaurants. It is so easy to go back to the restaurants you already know and love but there is something exciting about trying something new. You never know, you may just find your new favorite spot!
