4 Black-Owned Restaurants in Atlanta You Need to Know About

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Emory chapter.

During this pandemic we have all been ordering out for food an insane (but also understandable) amount. For all of us in this same position, I have compiled a list of four restaurants in Atlanta to try when you want to mix up your usual quarantine routine. Beyond being great restaurants with food you’ll love, they are also all black-owned! If you’re looking to help out local restaurants during this time, take a look at these black-owned restaurants in Atlanta and give them a try!

 #1. Atlanta Breakfast Club

The Atlanta Breakfast Club has to be on your ATL food bucket list. It’s located right in Downtown Atlanta, and serves (you guessed it) breakfast and brunch. On their southern-style menu you can find peach cobbler french toast, shrimp and grits, and, my favorite, chicken and waffles. They now have sit-down dining available (socially distanced), and they also offer delivery and takeout on their website.

Here is me and my dad eating chicken and waffles at the Atlanta Breakfast Club last year…we were very excited.

#2: Slutty Vegan Atlanta

Slutty Vegan (which is yes, entirely vegan) has an insane menu. You can find items like the One Night Stand (a plant-based burger with vegan bacon and vegan cheese), the Heaux Boy (a vegan shrimp burger), and the Hollywood Hooker (a vegan philly cheesesteak). The restaurant is really popular, and has quickly expanded. It even has a food truck that you can book for any occasion!

#3. Sublime Donuts

Sure, it’s not technically a restaurant, but I have seen Sublime Donuts at every Emory event–and for good reason. These donuts are so good, and they come in every flavor imaginable (and even some you couldn’t imagine). Their menu includes Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, Smores, Red Velvet Cake, and Honey Glazed Cinnamon Swirl donuts. The next time you want a study break order from Sublime!

#4: Old Lady Gang Southern Cuisine

This restaurant is owned by Kandi Burruss, from The Real Housewives of Atlanta, and if that doesn’t get you interested, the food will. You can find an array of southern comfort foods here: shrimp and grits, fried chicken, bbq rib tips, and bread and banana puddings for dessert. You can order now on DoorDash, and eat southern right on your couch!

All of these restaurants have loyal customers, serve great food, and have black owners! If you are going to support restaurants during this pandemic by ordering from them, you should consider adding some (or all) of these black-owned restaurants in Atlanta to your list!
