This Atlanta Ice Cream Shop is a Fall Must-Visit

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Emory chapter.

As we enter October, fall has clearly begun to make its mark in Atlanta. The leaves are just barely starting to turn, a chill has filled the air, and an overwhelming amount of pumpkin-spiced snacks have filled the grocery aisles. With the arrival of colder weather, ice cream may not be at the forefront of your mind. However, Atlanta’s popular ice cream shop, Butter & Cream, packs seasonal flavors that deem the shop a must-visit for fall.

Butter & Cream, located in downtown Decatur, has become a haven for Emory students and non-Emory students alike with its expansive menu of unique and delicious flavors. Unsurprisingly, this menu boasts seasonal flavors that scream fall: salted butterscotch, chai, and pumpkin spice. As a dedicated writer, of course, I had to sample each of these flavors and give my honest take. So, I present to you: an honest and comprehensive review of Butter & Cream’s fall flavors.

Pumpkin Spice

Ah, the classic and fan-favorite: pumpkin spice. Butter & Cream describes their version as “like pumpkin pie without the crust”, and it’s exactly that. With a mild sweetness and subtle notes of cinnamon and nutmeg, pumpkin spice is a cup of nostalgia, reminiscent of your grandma’s classic pumpkin pie. With no extra frills, a beautiful orange color, and a consistent and creamy texture, pumpkin spice is honest, delicious, and a taste of home.

Salted Butterscotch

Salted butterscotch, on the other hand, is quite an experience for your tastebuds. Upon first taste, I was struck with an intense sweetness that was quickly counteracted by a kick of saltiness. In this regard, salted butterscotch is intense and perhaps most suited for only the biggest of butterscotch enthusiasts. Though the saltiness is slightly overpowering, the combination of salty and sweet likens the ice cream to one of America’s favorite childhood candies: Werther’s Original. If you’re up for it, Butter & Cream’s salted butterscotch is an unforgettable flavor.

Chai

Last, but most certainly not least, is chai, which according to Butter & Cream’s menu, contains “notes of ginger, clove, cinnamon, cardamom, and fennel”. As an avid chai latte-drinker, I can attest that this ice cream definitely embodies chai, with the aforementioned spices coming through in each and every bite. These spices are well-balanced with a subtle sweetness that is delicious, yet not overbearing. This flavor transported me to my local Starbucks, capturing nearly the exact flavor of the chai tea latte (with almond milk) that I order on a near-daily basis. Needless to say, chai was my favorite of the three.

All three flavors I sampled were uniquely delicious and unapologetically “fall”. Whether you appreciate childhood classics, such as pumpkin spice, or a slightly more nuanced flavor, found in chai, Butter & Cream has something for you. So, as you begin to break out your fall sweaters, prepare your apple cider, and participate in other quintessential fall activities, be sure to add Butter & Cream to your fall bucket-list. With flavors that embody the season with each bite, Butter & Cream is a fall (or anytime) staple that is sure to please even the most critical ice cream connoisseurs.
