Jerry Seinfeld Plans To Do a Pop Tarts Movie

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Emerson chapter.

When you think of Pop Tarts, Seinfeld is probably not the first thing you think of. After Netflix was awarded tax breaks in California on February 28,  the production company announced its moving forward with Unfrosted, a film about the invention of the Pop Tart. According to Dateline, Jerry Seinfeld will star, direct, and produce the film. According to Variety, the film has a budget of $14.2 million.

Unfrosted is based on a long-running bit that’s been featured in many of Seinfeld’s stand-up comedy sets. From a breakdown of the bit featured in the New York Times, the comedian explains the fantastical qualities of the sugary breakfast treat as opposed to the other traditional breakfast options in the 1960s. In the video, he describes the pastry as a “Frosted fruit filled eatable breakfast that’s the same shape as the box it comes in, and with the same nutrition as the box it comes in.” The joke blew up so much it was featured in Seinfeld’s 2020 Netflix special, 23 Hours to Kill. This Pop Tart inspired film would finally bring the joke to life entirely.

“Stuck at home watching endless sad faces on TV, I thought this would be a good time to make something based on pure silliness,” Seinfeld told Dateline, “so we took my Pop-Tart stand-up bit from my last Netflix special and exploded it into a giant, crazy comedy movie.”

The movie is set to begin filming this spring, according to the Hollywood Reporter, and was co-written with Spike Feresten and Barry Marder, both of who helped Seinfeld create Bee Movie. Some speculate that the film will be far from a biopic about the toaster pastry but rather a comedic origin story.

While the announcement of the pastry based movie is premature, people have already taken to social media to express their opinions on the ironically funny concept

In other Pop Tart news, the Kellogg’s brand currently has new flavors available on their website such as Boston Creme Donut, Frosted Maple Eggo Waffle, and Frosted Apple Fritter
