Girl Scouts’ Latest Cookie Hit by Supply Chain Shortages

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Emerson chapter.

The supply chain crisis strikes again, but this time, a new Girl Scout cookie is under threat. In an update published on the Girl Scouts website earlier this month, the new “Adventurefuls” cookies are now in a nationwide shortage due to supply chain and labor disruptions.

Each Girl Scout council, depending on the area they’re located, contracts one of the two licensed bakers of Girl Scout Cookies: ABC Bakers and Little Brownie Bakers. This is the reason that some cookies have different names, but similar appearances. The supply chain issue is only affecting Little Brownie Bakers, according to the update, therefore only affecting specific councils and areas of the nation. As a result of the shortage, each Girl Scout council will be “limited to 7% of the minimum initial order amount that was forecasted last November.” Thankfully, no other cookie flavor has been affected by this labor shortage, according to the Washington Post.

The “Adventurefuls” cookie is described as “an indulgent brownie-inspired cookie with caramel-flavored crème and a hint of sea salt” and is the latest addition to the lineup of iconic Girl Scout cookies, joining the classic Samoas and Thin Mints.

The sales of the new cookie is a welcome surprise for Girl Scouts given their complicated struggle to sell cookies since the start of the pandemic. In 2021, Girl Scouts in Atlanta were left with $3 million dollars in unsold cookies due to conflicts of distribution out of concerns for the safety and health of the sellers. It’s been a complicated past few years for Girl Scout cookies, but their new partnerships with food delivery apps such as GrubHub and DoorDash and the added online direct shipping feature have eased their sales.

The infamous “Adventurefuls” cookies are now only available through online ordering, so get them while you can!
