Upgrade Your Mixed Drinks With These Simple Ingredients

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Duke chapter.

Most students would agree that college alcohol tastes awful no matter what. Every weekend we stick to the standard vodka red-bull or rum and coke; we even take sips with our eyes closed awaiting that inevitable bone-chilling aftertaste. There may be no problem with this ritual—after all, taste is not what most people are after. But wouldn’t it be wonderful if drinking alcoholic beverages was like drinking your favorite lemonade? I’ve been experimenting lately, and I have discovered four ingredients that will revolutionize your mixed drink staples. Enjoy alcohol the way it is meant to be enjoyed and never taste that tangy Aristocrat or Burnetts after-burn again.

Ginger Beer

Ginger beer (not to be confused with ginger ale) is a non-alcoholic fizzy drink that tastes much better than it sounds. Usually mixed with rum to make dark n’ stormies, it goes well with vodka and gin too. It softens the sharp edge and tastes delicious. Find ginger beer at any large chain grocery store near you and make this Moscow Mule.

Grapefruit Juice or Orange Juice (or both)

Forget the red bull, diet coke and sprite. If you truly want a good mixed drink, think citrus. Combine rum, tequila or vodka with these vitamin C boosters to counteract the alcohol kick. Check out some of these grapefruit cocktails for more ideas.

Grenadine

Grenadine should be a permanent resident in every student’s kitchen. Add a drop to any citrus based drink and enjoy its subtle sweetness. A personal favorite is a Tequila Sunrise, made with orange juice, grenadine, tequila and a squeeze of lime. It is the perfect start to every night out.

Whether it’s a gin and tonic or a dark n’ stormy, lime juice enhances every drink and adds a gourmet touch. If you are going for presentation, decorate your red cup with a wedge of lime. This citrus delight disguises any unwanted flavors and will likely become your favorite ingredient.
