Everything Duke Students Should Know About Sleep Before Finals

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Duke chapter.

A few weeks ago at Huffpost’s Sleep Revolution Event, we asked Duke students about their sleep and snacking habits – from how much they get to how much they know about sleep. Here are some of the most interesting responses:

1. Most Duke students sleep between 7-9 hours a night.

66% of those surveyed sleep a decent amount. The next biggest group (32%) sleeps 4-6 hours per night.

2. At Duke, the most popular late-night snacks are popcorn and chocolate

Honorarable mentions go to pizza, ice cream and PB&Js.

3. 64% of students never drink energy drinks

We assume this number would change if people counted coffee, but bravo to Dukies for not drinking caffeine- and sugar-loaded energy drinks.

4. 65% of Duke students haven’t pulled an all-nighter this semester

Shooters followed by a 3 AM cosmic trip doesn’t count.

5. Duke students know their coffee…

50% of those surveyed answered correctly that caffeine takes 4-6 to leave your body. Next time you’re at Vondy or Cocoa Cinnamon, stick to just one cup of coffee.

6. …but not what to eat at night

You should eat cherries, which contain melatonin, before you sleep, not dark chocolate like 50% of respondents said. Likewise, chicken (13.3%), not bananas (42.7%) or herbal tea (37.3%), helps you stay awake for long library nights.

Happy finals studying, get some sleep!

Born and raised in the Midwest, Emily has both loved and been baffled by southern food since moving to North Carolina. While okra and chicken with waffles are surprisingly delicious, her heart will forever belong to frozen custard. And, true to her Wisconsin heritage, she continues to call water fountains "bubblers."
