If you’re reading this, you already know that Spoon University is pretty darn cool, so why not join the fun? Here are 14 solid reasons to join Spoon at Drake University. If the reasons below sound like fun, be sure to apply at drake.spoonuniversity.com/apply.
1. You meet stellar new people.
Are you a freshman that wants to feel cooler by meeting upperclassmen? Are you an upperclassmen needing a swipe at Hubbell or Quad? Spoon University is a great way to accomplish both of those tasks. We meet weekly to get updates on each other’s lives, brainstorm some new article ideas and bond over our shared love of food.
2. You can get content published nationally.
Yes, you read that right. Spoon University is a national website, so anyone can view the content that you write. You can get great coverage (and become recognizable in the food scene) by writing or taking pictures for an article.
3. You feel the immediate satisfaction after getting a high number of page views.
Spoon University provides authors with analytics of each article that is published, which means you get to see the page views skyrocket.
4. The Spoon Headquarters team is pretty rad.
Spoon Headquarters is located in New York, but it feels like the employees have an office at Drake. Do you have a question? Email them, and they’ll get back to you within the day. They also provide feedback that can make your articles go from good to viral.
5. FREE FOOD.
You can’t pass this opportunity up. Many of our Spoon meetings have food at them, and our events have and will continue to feature free food as well.
6. You get to experience bonding events with the team.
And these bonding events are always centered around food. We love exploring new, local restaurants and creating recipes with each other.
7. There’s a potential for leadership opportunities.
We have a leadership team consisting of an Editorial Director, Community Manager and Social Media Manager. When these folks graduate, we’ll need someone to step up to each role and continue making Spoon great on Drake’s campus.
8. You learn about social media, which will help you in whatever career you go into after college.
Are you a business major? You’ll need social media skills. Environmental science major? You’ll need social media skills. Social media is so prevalent in our lives today, everything you learn about social media will impact your career.
9. We’re open to every age and major.
Not a journalism major? Not a problem! We accept people in all majors and ages, which means we also have diverse content on Drake’s page. We write about anything from food science to food history to original recipes.
10. You can find your creative outlet.
Homework can be stressful, and everyone needs an outlet to relieve that built-up stress. Creating recipes, cooking, photography and writing can be that necessary creative outlet.
11. You aren’t limited to one topic.
Yes, we write about food, but we try to incorporate every aspect of food within the article. As long as it relates to food in some way, we can publish it.
12. You can participate in national conferences about online writing, marketing and social media.
Because other universities are in the same network as us, many other college campuses hold conferences that are live-streamed about relevant topics that can help your work go viral. Spoon Headquarters also lets Spoon members into special events and holds conference calls to update members on important topics.
13. You can plan events on and off campus.
We plan events each month that correlate to a national theme, so there are many opportunities to plan events on campus as well as reach out to restaurants in the area that can raise awareness about Spoon.
14. You meet your best friends.
Fact: Friendship centers around food. And college is where you find your best friends. Put those two together, and it looks like you’ll be making tons of friends by joining Spoon!
