8 Discontinued Panera Bread Items We’re Still Mourning

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Denison chapter.

Every time I step foot in Panera Bread, my heart begins to ache and the withdrawals hit. All I can think about is ordering my most cherished items on the menu that are discontinued. I argue with the cashier as I place my order, to see if they can pull some strings, but I’m told these wonderful menu items just simply no longer exist.

Here are a few discontinued Panera Bread items that we cannot get out of our heads.

1. Chipotle Chicken Panini

After this heavenly sandwich made its mark and became discontinued, people were going mad crazy! However, in the fall of 2016, Panera made the decision to come out with “Chipotle Chicken Avocado Melt“. Similar, but not the same…

2. Crispani

Yes, once upon a time, Panera had pizza. It came during the month of October, just in time for “National Pizza Day.” Due to the fact that 94% of the U.S. population eats pizza, Panera thought this would be a great dinner option for guest. However, they never wanted their company to be seen as a “pizza” place. So when you’re craving a slice of ‘za, hit up Pizza Hut

3. Sierra Turkey Sandwich

Sad, but true. This bomb sandwich is really gone for good. The real reasoning was that Panera changed in sauce and bread they used to make this sandwich, which is a goner off the menu as a whole. People miss the Sierra Turkey so much that they’ve started a petition to bring it back, and you better believe I signed it.

4. Red Velvet Crinkle Cookie

‘Twas a sad and dreary day when these scrumptious cookies were taken off the menu. They paired perfectly with a cup of Panera’s Signature Hot Chocolate or as a little treat after lunch, but what went wrong? Even though you may not be able to purchase these cookies at Panera Bread, here is a recipe for you to put your domestic skills to the test and make some bomb Crinkle Cookies.

5. Asian Sesame Chicken Salad

You might be thinking a salad? Really? But this salad was EVERYTHING. Its disseverance occurred around the time of the ever-missed black bean soup, and many were shocked. This was a fan favorite and was heavily marketed, so why Panera? Why hurt the peoples feelings like that? Many people have attempted to replicate this healthy salad that they miss, so why not try it out?

6. Sun-Dried Tomato Cream Cheese

Yes, Panera is known for their warm and fresh bagels every morning, but more importantly, the unique cream cheese spreads that go along. Now they offer a cream cheese variety of walnut, hazelnut, wild blueberry and more, but why did the beloved sun dried tomato spread have to go? No one will ever understand.

7. Butternut Squash Ravioli

Panera only offers a small selection for pasta-lovers. However, many people complained that this ravioli meal was quite the rip off with overpriced small portion of raviolis. It was a “Panera Fave” by taste, but customers were always leaving hungry for more!

8. Black Bean Soup

This one was gone in a flash. I mean seriously, one Tuesday it was there, and by Thursday, the cashier looked at me like I was a loon when I ordered it. Seriously, this was the major casualty of them all, like WHY Panera? This was my OG, my go-to, my comfort in a cold world — ugh. Still not over it.

If you’re a loyal and devoted customer of Panera Bread, seeing one of your favorite menu items disappear can feel like a death in the family. Well, maybe it’s not that tragic, but you’ll certainly feel the loss. Even though these items are long gone, it gives you the opportunity to hit up the kitchen and see what you if you can whip up one of your favorite Panera meals.
