A First Time Diners View of Grain on Main

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Delaware chapter.

Like freshman on campus, new restaurants on Main Street have to earn their place among UD students. Some of them are lucky enough to be chains with a previous following, but when a one-of-a-kind place like Grain opens on Main Street, people can be kind of skeptical. As a freshman myself, I recently went to meet my fellow first-year resident.

Grain opened its doors this past fall. It can be easy to miss if you don’t know what to look for, especially all the way down on the East side of Main Street, but once you make it inside there is no turning back.

The first thought that went through my head was that I want to get married in this restaurant. Now that probably won’t actually happen, but the atmosphere and design of the restaurant was beautifully rustic—even the menu looked like something off of Pinterest.

Grain has managed to encompass a trendy but timeless look both on their walls and in their food. The menu stole my meat-loving heart with bacon burger and rib options. While I personally did not even consider lettuce anywhere except in a sandwich, I appreciate Grain keeping all food lovers in mind with lighter salad options. Choosing from all of the options was both a dream and nightmare, so I went with the restaurant’s self titled burger with cheese, bacon, and lettuce. Let me just say, those buns though. The soft texture of the bun was noteworthy as a perfect compliment to rest of the burger that was just as satisfying.

With only one friend by my side I had to hold off from getting the dessert nachos that called me from minute one, but the peach cobbler was perfect for stuffing ourselves after we were already full from our delicious meal. We just could not pass up dessert, and I had no regrets as my food baby grew. Another notable dessert is their chocolate cake, which is just about as big as your head.

Grain’s extensive menu surrounded by unique events and sites should not leave an open table. Take your next lunch date or girls night out group to Grain. I could see myself enjoying the Grain Burger as my dad gets distracted by the TVs and my mom appreciates the interior design. Grain has a long way to go before it becomes as well known as Klondike Kate’s or Iron Hill but there is a bright future for Grain on Main.

If i'm not eating food, I'm writing about it. There's really no in between for me except  when I'm editing my food Instagram @penneformythoughts. This summer I am on board as a remote intern to tackle the magic that is SEO. All of this comes after a childhood of picky eating, now leaving me open to try any foods that I missed out on all of these years. UD today; the world tomorrow.
