Cooper Union’s Spoon University Team’s Favorite Coffee Shops in LES

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Cooper chapter.

As college students (especially at Cooper), we all know how much of a necessity caffeine is. Between late night NAB runs, cold computer center shifts, seemingly endless critiques, and early morning classes, we all need that pick-me-up that will get us through the day. Here are some of our favorite coffee shops, introduced to you by your very own Spoon team!

Olivia – La Colombe

Founded on the principle that “America deserves better coffee and with over 20 locations around the states, La Colombe is famous for their draft latte (latte on tap). Although there’s no wifi, the consistently long lines speak for their delicious coffee, pastries, and picturesque interior and design. Go near closing hours to score free pastries, and don’t forget to try the pure black and tan. (I like it with more draft with no ice.)

Address: 400 Lafayette St, New York, NY 10003

Hours of Operation : 7:30am-6:30pm (Mon-Fri); 8:30am-6:30pm (Sat-Sun)

Helen – Pourt

Pourt is a minimalist coffee addict’s wet dream. It’s perfect for college students since it’s a cafe in the front and a workspace in the back. For only $10/hour or $38 for the day, you get unlimited cafe drinks, your own work station with personal outlets, and high-speed internet. And when you’re done studying, they have a rotating wine and beer menu for you to celebrate with.

Abe – Porto Rico

Porto Rico is the place to go for a quick cup of joe. They have SO many flavors of coffee beans available for sale, and have four brewed and available each day. Refills for any cup you bring in is $1 (yes, it can even be something with a Dunkin or Starbucks logo), but purchasing without your own cup is still super cheap. They also have lots of seasonal drinks (ie. eggnog latte, pumpkin spice latte).

Address: 40 St. Mark’s Place, New York, NY 10003

Hours of Operation: 9am-8pm (Mon-Sat); 12pm-7pm (Sun)

Troy – Coffee Project

With a cozy atmosphere and delicious cold brew, Coffee Project is famous for their Deconstructed Latte: a shot of espresso, milk, and latte, served with seltzer and biscuit. Sample the espresso for the hints of chocolaty sweetness, enjoy the rich flavor of the milk, and indulge the latte with intermittent bites of the cookie. This will surely change the way you see your lattes forever.

Address: 239 E 5th St, New York, NY 10003

Hours of Operation: 7am-6pm (Mon-Fri); 8:30am-6pm (Sat); 8:30am-5:30pm (Sun)

Jasmine – Mudspot

Mudshop’s only storefront, Mudspot, is one of the most memorable coffee shops around, not just because of their Iced MUD Drip, but because of their all-day brunch and late hours. It has been there for me for brunches, late night caffeine fixes, and everything in between. They also have a beautiful garden, so you can enjoy your picturesque brunch.
