The holiday season has arrived in New York, bringing along with it the city’s famous holiday markets filled with little shops selling artisan gifts, home goods, clothing, accessories and more. Even if you don’t plan on shopping, the cheerful atmosphere and eclectic foods will get you in a festive spirit!
Here’s a guide on where to feast on the best food and drink in six of the best markets New York City has to offer.
1) Winter Village @ Bryant Park
Whether you’re craving a sweet dessert or savory meal, the Winter Village has it all. Start by filling Chimney Cakes (a Hungarian dessert spot) with your choice of filling. Next, make your own mozzarella-topped sweet corn patty at Top Arepa. Finally, decide which of Sigmund’s Pretzels is your favorite before ice skating on the famous rink.
2) Grand Central Holiday Fair
After browsing through the stalls of handmade accessories, jewelry, and art, grab a bite at Great Northern Hall right across from the fair for a range of Nordic dishes. The best is Denmark’s famous smørrebrød (open rye sandwiches with a variety of toppings).
3) Chelsea Market
Be sure to check out Chelsea Market for the Jingle Holiday Pop-Up shop or its countless other stores. Try Los Tacos No. 1, one of New York’s best tacos, or warm up with a bowl of Kimchijigae (kimchi ramen) at Mokbar.
4) Urbanspace Union Square
Make your way through the local crowds with Dulcinea’s hot chocolate and churros. You will also find Doughnuttery’s mini doughnuts. Of the 15 flavors of salt they have to offer, I personally love Urban Monkey and Paris Time.
5) Brooklyn Flea & Winter Smorgasburg
Taste Filipino food like lumpia (Filipino-inspired spring rolls) or the sisig (marinated pig parts) rice bowl at Lumpia Shack. Another favorite is Hong Kong’s famous egg waffles topped with ice cream at Wowfulls. In this indoor flea market, it’s always warm enough for this cold treat.
6) Urbanspace Columbus Circle
Fill your belly here at Kaya’s gua bao (Taiwanese-style baos) or with Jolie’s freshly made cronuts. These “kronies” are available in flavors ranging from maple bacon to toasted coconut. They will definitely satisfy your hunger and warm you up.
Celebrating the holiday season in New York wouldn’t be complete without a visit to one of these holiday markets. And hey, it’s the most wonderful time of the year (aka feasting season) so it is definitely justifiable to grab every snack and bite you want along the way.
