As I get ready to study abroad next semester, I am preparing my stomach for all of the amazing foods I am going to eat. When you’re choosing a study abroad location, it’s important to make sure you’ll get a culinary education as well as a scholastic one. Get ready to eat!
10. Munich, Germany
Germany is known for hearty food and heartier beer. Studying in Munich will satisfy your cravings for both fresh produce and delicious bratwurst. Munich is a great study abroad location for those who envision themselves washing down a pretzel with some amazing beer. Plus, Munich has plenty of great cafes for your daily caffeine fix! Other than food, Munich is full of cultural experiences and stunning architecture.
9. Athens, Greece
If you love fresh seafood and salads, you’re in luck! Athens is famous for its healthy options, as well as delicious street food. Olive oil runs plentiful and you will never grow tired of tzatzki. Plus, Athens has a lot to offer in terms of history and culture. Spend your days touring the sites and tasting foods to your heart’s content.
8. Seville, Spain
Seville is regarded as the birthplace of tapas, which is a compelling reason to go try them there for yourself. Many of their tapas have a taste of their mouthwatering pork, which you have to eat to believe. If you’re in it for the sweets, ‘la merienda’ or afternoon snack, is the perfect time to grab a churro or two. After you’ve eaten, spend time strolling through one of Seville’s many beautiful parks and neighborhoods.
7. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Rio de Janeiro has amazing street food, with both heavy and lighter options. Meat lovers and vegans alike will be pleased with the wide selection, with classics ranging from meat kebabs to acai smoothies. Famous for its beaches, Rio de Janeiro is the perfect place to be surrounded by natural beauty, while enjoying some of the best food in the world.
6. Tokyo, Japan
Tokyo is a great place to enjoy regional specialties from all over Japan with a wide variety of options that range from street food to fine dining. Sushi lovers have the opportunity to enjoy a multitude of sushi, with some sushi restaraunts open 24 hours a day. Furthermore, Tokyo has lots of fun themed restaurants, so you can see a show during dinner, or even bring your pet. Tokyo has a great mix of modern and traditional architecture, making it a great city to explore.
5. Sydney, Australia
Not usually known as a foodie city, Sydney has quickly become a hot spot for trendy restaurants and cafes. Vegetarians and vegans will be pleased with the selection of plant based restaurants popping up all over the city. Plus, if you check out Instagram, you’ll see that Sydney’s fresh and colorful food looks great on the feed. Adventurous foodies will love the opportunity to combine outdoor adventures with food adventures such as crocodile and Vegemite.
4. Marrakech, Morocco
Marrakech has a unique foodie scene unlike any other. It’s another city that is both veggie and meat eater friendly. Marrakech has it all. Try some couscous and b’stilla and make sure to test out the many street food stalls you’ll have right by you. There are also plenty of fine dining restaurants with amazing wine selections. After you’re full, check out the bustling marketplaces as well as the serene gardens and palaces. You will never get bored.
3. Mumbai, India
If you’re a fan of spices and bread (aren’t we all?) then you will surely find lots to eat in Mumbai. Brun maska is a local bread that is crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. Adding butter and sugar and dipping it in chai tea serves as the perfect treat. Mumbai also has some of the most beautiful landmarks in the world, such as the Taj Mahal and the Chhatrapati Shivaji train station.
2. Paris, France
If you’re a baguette lover, you will love the breakfast opportunities in Paris. Plus, you will have some of the best butter, cheese, pastries, wine, and chocolate in the world. You can pretty much find any kind of food in Paris, which makes it a great spot for foodies to study abroad and discover new cuisines. Plus, Paris has beautiful landmarks all over the city and stunning landscapes just a short trip away.
1. Florence, Italy
Florence is known for its pasta, gelato, pizza, and wine. This isn’t like the kind of pasta you are used to. You’ve got to eat it to believe it! If you love a nice charcuterie board, you are also in luck. With all of the stunning plazas and cathedrals, you will certainely have lots to do. Plus, Florence is a quick trip from the coast and other major cities in Italy. This makes it the perfect place for foodies to study abroad.
