Dieting is always a popular fad around any major holiday or a beach vacation. However, if you have one too many specialty drinks or too much food during your break, a good detox needs to be in your back pocket and a smoothie detox is a little more desirable.
You may ask what the purpose of a detox is. It’s a process that requires detoxifying liquids to pass through your body to clean out your organs so they can function easier. A detox can also help with weight loss, treat acne and much more.
After researching some detox options and talking to friends about some of the cleanses they have tried, I landed on Dr. Oz’s Three-Day Detox. The detox includes drinking three different smoothies in place of meals and having one smoothie as a snack. My friend Abbie tried this detox, so I spoke with her to hear about her experiences and thoughts on it. After only eating liquids, detoxes can be difficult to get through, but here are her words and opinions about the three days.
Day 1
After the fun Spring Break adventures Abbie went on, she felt like she needed to cleanse her system and try a detox. With a friend to go through it with her, she was ready to take on the three days.
Abbie started her day off with a cup of green tea with lemon, which kickstarted her detox. Following the detox plan, she then made her first smoothie, which is during breakfast: banana, raspberries, spinach, chia seeds (substituted for flax seeds), almond butter, lemon, and water. So far this smoothie is enjoyable and the first day is going well.
Day 2
Today, Abbie stayed motivated knowing that this cleanse is halfway over and she is getting rid of all the toxins in her body. She admitted that today’s lunch smoothie, if you could even call it that, was a little harder to swallow and gets a soft smile ranking. It included: 4 celery stalks, 1 cucumber, 1 cup of kale, 1/2 green apple, 1/2 lime, 1 tablespoon of coconut oil, 1 cup of pineapple, and 1/2 cup of almond milk. Abbie said thanks to the pineapple, this smoothie was not the worst thing she’s had.
Day 3
Luckily this was the last day. After being without coffee and having little energy, Abbie and her friend went to the gym to sweat a little, doing 3.1 miles on the treadmill and 3.1 miles on the elliptical. She had her final dinner smoothie, which was her favorite. It included 1/2 cup of mango, 1 cup of blueberries, 1 1/2 cups of coconut water, 1/4 avocado, chia seeds, 1 cup of kale, 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper, and 1 tablespoon of lemon.
Final Feedback
After talking with Abbie, she told me the detox was great, but hard because it cleans your body out. Most importantly, she felt great after and could tell a difference thanks to the detox. I guess it did its job!
