A trip to a bakery is an outing like no other. The sweet smell of sugar in the air, the glass cases filled with tasty treats, and so many happy faces with oogley eyes and big smiles. Seriously, I could write love letters to bakeries all day.
Chicago is known for having a fabulous food scene, and its bakeries will not let you down. They are all over the city, and each has something different to offer. You can find conchas at bakeries in Pilsen, cannoli in Little Italy, and fresh bread, pastries, and desserts on pretty much on every block in the city.
Picking my top three was not an easy task. But, if you have limited time in Chicago, here are the places you must go to.
1. Sweet Mandy B’s
Okay, anyone that is from Chicago probably knew that I was going to say this. But it’s well-known for a reason, right? Walking into Sweet Mandy B’s feels a little bit like watching Charlie and the Chocolate Factory while on the couch in a fuzzy blanket. There’s no better feeling.
Known for their old-fashioned desserts, there’s no way you can go wrong here. I will let you in on a little secret though: they have the best buttercream frosting you will ever have in your life. Try a cupcake, a whoopee pie, or if you’re really feeling yourself, just go ahead and get a whole cake. You won’t be mad about it.
2. Bittersweet Pastry Shop & Cafe
I’ve never seen a more beautiful dessert than any of the options at Bittersweet. There’s nothing more satisfying than a dessert that tastes and looks amazing. Get the camera ready.
If you’re headed to Bittersweet in the morning, the flaky chocolate croissants are the way to go. Later in the day, their homemade Oreos are a perfect pair with a cup of coffee. If you’re in the mood for cake, get the red velvet.
3. Floriole Cafe & Bakery
You might get stressed out when you first walk into Floriole because there are so many delicious options. Don’t worry though, the smell of freshly baked bread will get you through this tough decision.
Floriole has some of the best bread I’ve ever had. The house sourdough is just so dang good that I may or may not end up eating a whole loaf in one day. For something sweet, the pain au chocolat and the miniature pies (when available) won’t disappoint.
Check out these places when the sweet tooth kicks in. While Chicago is full of amazing bakeries, these three stand out. They each have something different to offer, and you will undoubtedly find something that you will enjoy.
