I’m sure all of you have heard about Buzzfeed’s “American try Canadian candies for the first time and Americans try… (inserts random non-American foodstuff here).” This time around, I, an international student from Malaysia, will be providing you guys my first impressions on a variety of Canadian chocolate bars.
Ever since I arrived in Canada, I’ve been very curious about the different candies offered. Does every Canadian candy include maple syrup? Is the candy as nice as the Canadian people, or is it just like regular chocolate from everywhere else? Here are my thoughts on a few candies I managed to try.
Malteser
I really like the idea of this whole tiny circular bite-sized chocolate. The Maltesers were so good. It’s definitely a (mal) tease with its tiny size. I saw myself reaching out for it after I was done collecting my thoughts for the article. 10/10 would recommend.
Eat-More
Eat-More was definitely one of the more interesting candy bars out there. Its sticky texture reminds me a bit of a protein bar or an oatmeal bar with toffee. It also feels kind of healthy, which makes me want to “eat-more.”
Oh! Henry
Oh! Henry got me like “Oh! I need more!” It’s super tasty, especially with the nuts. I guess I’m nut-biased. It has a good balance of chocolate, caramel and nuts. Really, really enjoyed this one, although it was a tad bit sweet for me.
Mr. Big
The shape of Mr. Big really looked promising. There was rice crisp with decent tasting caramel. If you’re wondering why this Mr. Big bar isn’t the full size, it’s cause I couldn’t continue eating any more full-size candy bar so I opted for the fun-sized version. I had to continue trying out more candy without getting sick.
Wunderbar
Wunderbar wasn’t too wunderful, but it was definitely much better than Caramilk. The Wunderbar has a sort of crunch I like, but something about the whole thing just is off…
I must say, I did accidentally catch myself saying “Wonderbra” numerous times. Freudian slip.
Also, fun fact: It’s called Star Bar in Ireland.
Coffee Crisp
Coffee Crisp didn’t really live up to its coffee taste as much as I hoped. There was only a hint of coffee, and it was nothing strong. But I like the wafer texture, as it’s very different from Kit Kat’s classic wafer. The wafer is slightly thinner than the Kit Kat’s, but I would definitely see myself eating this again. This would be good for those who like a tad bit of coffee in their chocolate.
Caramilk
Nonononono! I don’t like this at all. The caramel tastes extremely cheap and it has a bad aftertaste. The only thing I like about Caramilk is the milk chocolate coating, but the caramel is just NO.
Big Turk
More like a Big No! Blehks. The filling does not taste anything like a Turkish Delight. I was very disappointed. Just ew. I’ve had better. Try out Tim Tam’s Sweet Wishes instead, if you’re game for chocolate bars with Turkish Delight.
As you can see, almost no Canadian chocolate bar is coated with maple syrup. Kidding, I just haven’t found one yet. But fret not, when I do, I’ll be sure to eat it — I mean… write about it for Spoon.
