What to Order at White Castle If You’re Vegetarian

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Bridgeport chapter.

As a Bronx native, there are a few food-related staples in my hometown I still look forward to eating when I’m home on breaks. With seven locations in my borough alone, White Castle happens to be one of these food staples. White Castle’s combos come with at least two of their famous slider sliders, but if you’re eating with friends you’ll definitely want get one of their Crave Cases that come with 30 delicious sliders. I have so many great memories of sitting around a table with friends and family chowing down on as many sliders as we can possibly eat.

Sounds amazing, right? Maybe not for everyone, since it can be pretty tricky for a vegetarian to eat at a place known for its beef sliders. I have a few friends who are on strict vegetarian diets and have never experienced the joy that is White Castle. If I’m being honest, “White Castle vegetarian food” doesn’t sound right. But fret not veggie lovers, White Castle has options that will satisfy your cravings for fast food.

#SpoonTip: All nutritional information was pulled from White Castle’s website including the menu displayed on the site.

Breakfast Menu

Hash Brown Nibblers

These bite-sized has browns are the perfect start to any morning. You can also order a cup of coffee to go with your morning potatoes.

#SpoonTip: White Castle serves breakfast all day, so you don’t have to wake up at 8am for some yummy hash brown nibblers.

Oatmeal

I know it’s weird for a fast food restaurant specializing in sliders to serve oatmeal. But if you’re looking for a quick and filling breakfast, White Castle has maple and brown sugar oatmeal for you.

#SpoonTip: You can choose between berries or honey-roasted almonds as a topping for your oatmeal, depending on what you’re feeling.

Main Menu

Veggie Sliders

Made from carrots, string beans, zucchini, peas, broccoli, and spinach, White Castle offers veggie sliders fitting for any vegetarian diet. You can top this burger with either sweet Thai sauce, ranch, or honey mustard.

#SpoonTip: In 2015, the chain released a “veganized” bun making it the first vegan menu item (just be sure to avoid the ranch and honey mustard options if you’re vegan since they contain milk and eggs, respectively).

The Impossible Slider

White Castle recently partnered up with Impossible Foods added a new plant-based slider on their menu earlier this month. The point of this new menu item is to enjoy a slider that looks and tastes like a beef patty, but is vegan-friendly.

#SpoonTip: Because the Impossible Slider is very new, it’s only available in Chicago, New York, and New Jersey at the moment.

Sides

French Fries

White Castle’s crinkle-cut fries have been on the menu since 1921, and they’re a great addition to veggie sliders (or even on their own for a quick snack).

#SpoonTip: White Castle fries are commonly ordered with cheese sauce to enhance the flavor.

Onion Rings

White Castle onion rings are another must-order side. I’ve never ordered a Crave Case without at least one order of onion rings. It’s nice to shake things up when fries get boring.

#SpoonTip: White Castle offers onion chips as a menu item as well. They’re basically onion rings in the form of chips/bits rather than a ring shape.

Mozzarella Cheese Sticks

I absolutely love mozzarella sticks. Perfect for when you’re not feeling fries or onion rings, mozzarella sticks are a great option, especially for cheese lovers. An order will get you seven cheesy sticks and marinara sauce.

Cheese Curd Nibblers

Cheese curds are basically deep fried cheese bits, and they’re phenomenal. Although high in calories, they make a great once-in-a-blue-moon snack.

Desserts

Brownie on a Stick

Why eat a plain brownie when you can have a chocolate-dipped brownie on a stick? Get one at White Castle to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Cheesecake on a Stick

Light, creamy cheesecake is dipped in chocolate and put on a stick for…easier on-the-go snacking? To make it look cuter? As you can see, White Castle has a thing for desserts on a stick. Good luck resisting this yummy temptation.

Shakes

White Castle offers milkshakes in the standard chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry flavors. Generally, the flavor options can vary depending on location, but you’re sure to find some sort of delectable frozen treat no matter which White Castle you visit.

As you can see, White Castle has numerous options for vegetarians, and the chain continues to seek new ways to serve those with special diets. It’s also important to note that menu items may vary by location and that White Castle is known for releasing limited-time menu items such as fruit smoothies and black bean sliders throughout the year, so make sure to keep an eye out.

I hope the next time you find yourself craving fast food, you make your way over to your nearest White Castle and purchase a Crave Case catered to your taste, “for the love of slider.”

I'm a foodie at heart and a traveler in my mind. Unsurprisingly, food adventures are one of my favorite pass times. I  love meeting new people and trying new things. The unknown can be scary, but can also lead you to places beyond your imagination. I'm trying to soak up every experience I can before graduation in May, and even then, adventure will be all that is out there!
