Why Gelato is Better than Ice Cream

To all the ice cream lovers: yes, you read that right. Gelato is way better than ice cream. If there was an eighth wonder of the world it would be gelato. It’s got all the qualities that make a great dessert: it’s creamy, flavorful, and delicious. Another point for the Italians.

Lucky for BC students, authentic Sicilian gelato is a short Uber ride away. Morano Gelato in the Chestnut Hill Mall serves up a variety of traditional Sicilian gelato as well as a few Americanized flavors. Their chocolate chip, dark chocolate, and pistachio flavors have secured their place on the daily menu while new flavors are introduced every day. Morano Gelato uses fresh, seasonal ingredients and has debuted unique flavors such as Ferraro Rocher, Creme Brulee, and S’mores for the Fourth of July.

The founder, Morgan Morano, learned the trade of gelato making from a gelateria owner in Florence. She strives to recreate her experience in Florence at her gelateria in Chestnut Hill. Morano’s passion for gelato truly shows and has elevated her gelato to Sicily-like standards. While BC may be an 8 hour flight away from Italy, there just so happens to be a taste of Italy in our backyard.

How It Differs From Ice Cream

Gelato differs from ice cream in three ways and these small differences make it that much better.

1. It is served at a warmer temperature than ice cream which makes it ideal for consuming. Ice cream is served colder which means you have to wait a little bit for it to melt in your mouth for it to be just the right temperature. Gelato, however, is ready to enjoy right away. 

2. Gelato is a denser frozen dessert which means it contains less air than ice cream. This makes it much smoother and higher quality so you can feel like Italian royalty during consumption.

3. Finally, it has less butter fat. This helps you perceive and taste the flavor better. It also means gelato is healthier than ice cream which is completely justifies eating it every day…or every meal

So there you have it. What’s not to love about gelato? Delicious and better for you than ice cream. Transporting yourself to Italy is easy: it just takes one cup of this amazing frozen dessert. Jump on the gelato bandwagon, you won’t regret it.
