Salmon Skin Chips?! What on Earth?

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at ASU chapter.

Who doesn’t love a fresh, deliciously prepared salmon dish?! When cooking salmon, most people toss the skin or buy it skinless but, what they don’t know is that the skin is the most nutritious part. And what better way to enjoy a superfood snack than in chip form. Enter: GOODFISH’s unique salmon skin chips.

Why You Should Be Devouring the Skin

Long story short, salmon skin has more Omega 3 fatty acids than any other part of the fish. If you’re unfamiliar with Omega 3 fatty acids, they “may help protect the heart against specific risk factors for heart disease, such as blood pressure.”  Omega 3’s also can improve depression and anxiety, ward off autoimmune diseases, make you sleep better, decrease inflammation, and promote brain function. Oh, and did I mention that Omega 3’s are the secret to beautiful, radiant skin?! Their counterpart, Omega 6 fatty acids are inferior in comparison to Omega 3 fatty acids. What’s alarming is that the standard American diet is rich in Omega 6 fatty acids and low in Omega 3 fatty acids. Salmon is very high in Omega 3 fatty acids and B vitamins, but, the skin of the fish provides even more nutritional benefits.

Also, cooking your salmon with the skin on keeps the salmon moist and prevents dry fish!

You’ve probably even seen salmon skin rolls at your favorite sushi restaurant. The skin is typically baked or fried to give it a bacon taste and consistency.

In more recent news, a company called GOODFISH has come out with a healthy salmon skin chip that is flying off the shelves.

GOODFISH is a local Alaskan company that blasts the benefits of salmon skin on their website by claiming that Salmon skin keeps you “radiant, smart, going and smiling.” And science doesn’t disagree with them.

So what makes these chips different?

GOODFISH uses Alaskan wild caught sockeye salmon from Bristol Bay to make their chips. They use wild caught salmon because, farmed Atlantic salmon contains more chemicals and bacteria. Once the skin is ready to go, they then dry the skin before they fry it up to its delicious, mouth watering crispy form. The final step is bagging it up, oh and of course you devouring it! Added bonus, GOODFISH is also gluten-free and keto friendly.

With GOODFISH, eating chips can now improve your skin, promote brain health and reduce your chances of developing various diseases.

So, this sounds good and all but, how does it taste? Luckily for you, I’ve tried GOODFISH salmon skin chips and rated four of the five flavors 1-10 (1 being the worst and 10 being the best.)

GOODFISH currently comes in five scrumptious flavors including Sea Salt, Chili Lime, Spicy BBQ, Tart Cranberry, and Sriracha Lemongrass.

Sea Salt

A classic. How can you go wrong with sea salt? This was the best flavor of the bunch but, it must be noted that these fish skin chips are… well… fishy. The fish flavor is very potent so be prepared for that. (These chips are nothing like “cauliflower chips” that taste nothing like cauliflower.) The fishy taste is off putting and if you aren’t a fan of fish skin already, these chips might be overwhelming to you. Nevertheless, as a salmon skin super fan, I enjoyed these chips and this flavor the most! My taste team was less enthusiastic about the chips and didn’t enjoy the fishy flavor (that being said they also don’t like salmon skin in general.)

My team’s overall rating for this flavor was an 8/10.

Chili lime

This flavor tasted similar to the sea salt flavor. Again, the chips were fishy (but what do you want expect, they are fish skin chips.) This flavor would taste good dipped in guacamole or with salsa!

The taste team’s executive decision on this particular flavor was a 6/10.

Spicy BBQ

I enjoyed this flavor. It’s not spicy and the BBQ flavor isn’t very strong but, it does hide some of the fishiness. If you are hesitant to try these chips, I’d recommend starting with this flavor because it’s the least fishy of the group. The BBQ flavor hides some of the fishiness but, not all.

Overall, Spicy BBQ received a 7/10 from my taste team.

Tart Cranberry

Originally, I was thrown off by this flavor, it seems like a weird combination. To be honest, I really didn’t like this flavor. It didn’t taste like cranberry. My team all collectively agreed that we would rate it a 4/10.

Don’t wanna take my word for? See what other people are saying about GOODFISH. GOODFISH has been featured in the Los Angeles Times, Forbes and food bloggers, like GigiEats (the self-proclaimed salmon queen of Instagram), can’t stop gushing about these magical fish chips.
