As college students it seems as though there are only two feasible solutions for quenching our inevitable desire for alcohol: either buy cheap booze that tastes foul or spend a pretty penny on some good quality alcohol.
But what if I assured you could buy inexpensive, quality alcohol without suffering from buyer’s remorse. At these 5 local DC spots, you won’t have to.
1. Tenley Wine & Liquors 4525 Wisconsin Ave, NW
This liquor store in Tenleytown, right near American University, has a variety of beverages suitable for everyone and is also revered for its discounts. Pay a dollar extra for ultra desirable VIP card. The VIP card guarantees you a 10% discount on all beer and wine purchases and a 5% discount on all liquor.
2. Ace Beverage 3301 New Mexico Ave, NW
Although this store sells an abundance of wine, it also offers popular brands of hard alcohol. The cheaper hard liqours are located inside the blue baskets by the doors. Each bottle cost between $10 to $15, which is equivalent to one drink at any DC night club.
3. Giant 3336 Wisconsin Ave, NW
We can’t help but love the fact that DC grocery stores can legally sell alcohol. Even better, Giant on Wisconsin Ave. has a mini bar which offers a free daily sample of a wine. The bar also offers fresh guacamole and chips. Free wine and guac, what more could you ask for?
Turn up while running errands during Giant’s daily happy hour between 4 pm – 7 pm.
4. The Mad Hatter 1319 Connecticut Ave, NW
The only thing mad about the Lewis Carroll inspired bar are the prices. Every Thursday night Mad Hatter serves beer for a dollar a mug. Added bonus: there’s no cover charge.
Another tip: order your beer upstairs. The mugs upstairs are slightly larger than the ones downstairs.
5. Shenanigan’s 2450 18th Street, NW
Now this is a bar that your wallet can appreciate. Every Friday and Saturday night from 9 pm – 11 pm all mixed drinks and beers are unlimited for only $10.
