9 Ways to Deck Out Your Hot Chocolate

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at American chapter.

Here at Spoon AU, classic cup of hot chocolate doesn’t cut it. That’s why I’ve compiled ten ways to take winter’s favorite beverage to the next level that, while complex in flavor, are a cinch to put together. So grab yourself a mug and your favorite hot chocolate mix  (this is the link to mine) and get ready to savor the coziest flavors of the season.

1. Pumpkin Spice Hot Chocolate

I know, I know, pumpkin spice season is coming to an end, but before you lock it away, add a little of that fall festivity into this perfect transitional beverage. Simply mix 1/4 teaspoon of autumn’s leftover pumpkin spice mix into your mug. Garnish with whipped cream and an extra sprinkle of cinnamon and nutmeg to make it really explode in your mouth.

2. Orange Hot Chocolate

The more adventurous food-lovers out there will love the unexpected yet ever-so succulent combination of orange and chocolate. Add 3 2-inch long strips of orange rind to your mug and try to restrain yourself as they steep for 2-3 minutes before tasting.

3. Chai Hot Chocolate

This combination of winter’s two classic treats is sure to keep you toasty warm no matter what weather Jack Frost is throwing your way. After steeping a chai tea bag in your mug for a few minutes, add a swirl of whipped cream and an extra sprinkle of cinnamon and nutmeg for an extra kick of spicy warmth.

4. Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate

Your friends will never believe how easy it is to whip up this sinfully decadent treat. Just stir in 2-3 tablespoons of your favorite caramel syrup and a sprinkle of coarse sea salt into your mug. Make sure everything is dissolved before adding a show-stopping display of whipped cream and extra caramel drizzle on top.

5. Coconut Hot Chocolate

Is winter not really your thing? Would you rather be lounging on tropical sands rather than braving the snow and ice? Well, bring the beach to you by brewing up this sweet ode to summer. Prepare your hot chocolate to the normal directions, but replace your typical milk selection with coconut milk. For a presentation reminiscent of a sweet summer cocktail, rim your mug with a little toasted coconut.

6. Raspberry Hot Chocolate

Winter may not be berry picking season, but that doesn’t mean you have to wait to get your fruity fix. Mix a tablespoon or two of raspberry preserves into your hot chocolate for sweet treat reminiscent of spring. Pro tip: Swap out your typical hot chocolate mix for a white chocolate variety to kick this drink up to the next level of decadence.

7. Peanut Butter Hot Chocolate

How can we discuss chocolate variations without giving an honorable mention to this dynamic duo? A tablespoon of peanut butter is all that’s needed to bring this sippable Reese’s cup into fruition. Stir well to make sure the peanut butter’s fully melted. Then top off your mug with whipped cream and chopped peanuts or (if you’re looking for more of a sugar fix) crushed pieces of your favorite chocolate-peanut butter candy.

8. Mexican Hot Chocolate

If you’re looking to add a little spice to your night spent lounging by the fire, this recipe is for you. Two shakes of chile powder and 1 shake of cinnamon is all it takes to create this unique treat. Add irresistible richness to the already complex combination with a dollop of coconut cream on top.

9. Spiked Hot Chocolate

If you’re looking to make your X-Mas X-rated, it doesn’t get easier than this recipe. Simply add a splash of marshmallow flavored vodka to your mug, and you’re good to go. For an extra festive topping whip 1 cup of heavy cream until thick, then beat in 3 tablespoons of sugar and 1 tablespoon of marshmallow flavored vodka. Just make sure to keep this one out of reach of the kids!
