Nick Saban Supports BABH So You Should Too

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Alabama chapter.

What is BABH?

Beat Auburn Beat Hunger, or “BABH,” has been helping Alabamians in need since 1994. The University of Alabama teamed up with the Community Service Center and the West Alabama Food Bank to engage in a friendly competition with Auburn University and the East Alabama Food Bank to see who can collect the most cans of food. The organization has united students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members by raising awareness and giving back to the community. BABH has helped to raise almost 5 million pounds of food for people in need in the fight to beat hunger and Auburn.

Some Stats Regarding Hunger

• Over 49 million people including 16.7 million children are hungry in the U.S.

• 16.1 million of U.S. households experience food insecurity or hunger

• 721,875 Alabamians live in poverty, including 244,661 children

• 919,670 Alabama households are food insecure

• Food Stamps are the U.S.’s leading defense against hunger for low-income people

• Average monthly food stamp benefit per person is $90.50 in Alabama

BABH Partners

BABH has grown as an organization with each passing year.  Various UA athletic teams such as UA Rowing, Men’s Hockey, Men’s Basketball and many more have shown their support for the organization. Greek organizations and of course our spoon chapter got involved too and came together to donate as many cans as possible. At a recent Dierks Bentley concert BABH asked concert goers to bring cans so they could be collected at the door.

How You Can Help

Right now there is a BABH food drive happening right here at UA and there’s tons of ways you can get involved. You can attend a restaurant percentage night, buy a BABH t-shirt at the Center for Service and Leadership, organize an office-wide competition or place canned foods in their various red barrels around campus. Take a moment to consider what aspect(s) of this organization you could get involved with before the canned food drive ends November 16th! Saban would be proud of you.
