I Tried Whataburger’s New Hot Honey Crisp Whatachick’n Sandwich & Here’s My Honest Review

Across the south, Whataburger is a college town staple, and when they release a new limited time option it’s a good idea to pay attention. The Hot Honey Crisp Whatachick’n Sandwich launched June 2 and is made with a crispy chicken filet, a creamy red pepper cheddar cheese spread, and a chili crisp hot honey glaze on a potato bun. Seeing as how I’ve already tried it twice, I can tell you it might just be one of the best things to come out of fast food this summer.

What is the Hot Honey Crisp Whatachick’n Sandwich?

At first look, it is a simple golden bun with honey drizzling out from the sides and not much else. Once you open it up though, you’re met with hot honey heaven that has visible chili crisp bits spread across the top bun and chicken filet. On the other side of the filet is the red pepper cheddar spread everywhere, coating both the bun and the filet entirely, hinting at what’s to come in your first bite.

What does the Hot Honey Crisp Whatachick’n Sandwich taste like?

Immediately, the spice hits you, but it doesn’t overwhelm you and sit there. Instead it mellows out quickly as the blow is softened by the creamy red pepper cheddar spread which evens everything out. With each bite you’re given a genuinely well-balanced sandwich providing sweet, spicy, and creamy all at once without anything overpowering the others.

The chicken filet is actually pretty juicy, which isn’t always expected with fast food chicken. The hot honey and cheese add a ton of moisture, so don’t expect the cleanest eating experience. Surprisingly though, the bun was soft yet still firm enough to hold everything together considering how messy the sandwich is. If you’ve had messy sandwiches before, then you know how much it sucks when the bun falls apart mid-bite. One thing that really shocked me was how unsalty the whole thing was. Between the honey, the cheese, and the crispy chicken, you would expect it to be overly heavy and salty, but it was honestly perfect.

Is it worth it?

At $7.99 for the sandwich alone, it sits comfortably in line with the rest of Whataburger’s menu, making it an easy purchase in my opinion. A well-put-together sandwich that’s sweet, spicy, creamy, and messy in the most pleasant way possible, this is worth every cent.

If you’re a serious spice lover, this probably won’t blow your mind on just the heat alone. But if what you’re looking for is something messy, satisfying, and hits every part of your tongue, the Hot Honey Crisp Whatachick’n is for sure the move this summer. Grab one before it’s gone.
