Whenever my parents and I drive to Austin to drop me off at college, our favorite road trip stops are Buc-ee’s and McDonald’s. If you’re ever been on a road trip in Texas, you know that Buc-ee’s is the best for cheap gas and large restrooms. As for McDonald’s, my parents and I just like their chicken nuggets. I’m a simple girl – my go-to sauce at McDonald’s has always been ketchup. However, this might be changing now that McDonald’s has dropped their new Special Edition Gold Sauce.
What is the Special Edition Gold Sauce?
On September 3rd, McDonald’s introduced their new Special Edition Gold Sauce. The sauce is tangy, sweet and savory, and the flavor profile is inspired by North Carolina barbecue. This limited-edition campaign gives consumers new, flavorful ways to enjoy what McDonald’s serves, and McDonald’s released special edition versions of some of their signature offerings, such as the snack wrap, McCrispy sandwich, and McCrispy chicken strips. I tried every component of this new release when it came out yesterday, so here’s what I think.
What does the Special Edition Gold Sauce taste like?
The Gold Sauce, as described by McDonald’s, is inspired by the tangy, sweet-and-smoky flavor profile of North Carolina barbecue. Some of its ingredients include mustard, honey, and smoke. I love the combination of sweet and savory flavors, and I enjoyed how this sauce was a bit more mustard forward than other sauces in similar categories. The sauce paired well with the rest of the new Special Edition offerings.
How is the Special Edition Gold Snack Wrap?
This was my first time trying a McDonald’s snack wrap in general, and it’s safe to say that it did not disappoint. The wrap consists of crispy chicken, lettuce, cheese, and the Special Edition Gold Sauce, and each element of the wrap comes together to create a delicious, cohesive flavor. Also, considering that it’s only $2.99 per wrap, I’ll definitely be ordering this on my next road trip to Austin.
And the Bacon Special Edition Gold McCrispy Sandwich?
The Bacon Special Edition Gold McCrispy comes in two versions: normal and deluxe. The normal hits all the notes of a classic chicken sandwich, and the pickle flavor cuts through the richness of the chicken and the sauce. The deluxe version is for those who enjoy an amped-up bite. As someone who’s a big fan of chicken sandwiches with veggie toppings, this one did not disappoint, and the lettuce and tomatoes were a fresh, tasty addition.
Last but not least, the McCrispy Strips. Of all the combinations I tried this sauce with, these were my favorite. Granted, one of my favorite ways to eat fried chicken is in strips, so there may be a bit of bias there. The strips are battered and seasoned well, and it’s fried to crispy perfection so each piece can easily be dunked into the sauce.
Don’t miss your chance to experience the new McDonald’s Special Edition Gold lineup, and try these new flavors for yourself before they’re gone!
