Why You Need to Try Oyamel Cocina Mexicana for Brunch

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at American chapter.

If you’ve ever been to DC , then you have most likely passed or eaten brunch at one of José Andrés’ many restaurants. He is the owner of DC classics such as Jaleo, Beefsteak, China Chilcano and Zaytinya.

But, in my opinion, his best restaurant: Oyamel Cocina Mexicana. There are butterflies everywhere you look inside, table side guacamole and lots of small plates that you can share with friends for brunch.

The reason I first went to Oyamel was because of a BuzzFeed article about the greatest places in the world for hot chocolate. Oyamel’s Mexican hot chocolate made the list, and as it is in DC, I needed to make the trip. I need to try to remake it at home.

The friend that I went with is vegetarian so we mostly got dishes without meat. We each got the huevos rancheros, which is a fried egg on top of a tortilla with salsa roja, queso fresco and avocado.

Next we split the ensalada de frutas fresca (fruit salad with lime and chili). It is delicious, perfect for summer and so easy to make.

The pièce de resistance, however, was the queso fundido con tequila. This is a dish of melted cheese, charred poblano peppers with tortillas on the side. What could be better?

So if you and your friends are looking for a new brunch spot in DC, then look no further than Oyamel.
