Opened in 1998, Upland Brewery has quickly grown to become one of Bloomington’s most well-known restaurants. Their vast array of locally brewed beers in combination with their show-stopping menu and friendly staff, have helped Upland excel in Bloomington’s competitive restaurant world.

Upland always has 10 brews on tap, but they are constantly changing. Some are Upland classics, while others, like the Side Trail Series Beers, change periodically. Side Trail Series Beers are regularly released new, unique brewer creations, all meant for the experimental beer drinker. These beers may be hoppy or malty, light-bodied or heavy, but they will never be the same.

We tried a couple of these Side Trail Series Beers on our visit to Upland, and loved the Sweet Myrtle. As craft beer newbies, we weren’t sure what we would think about these adventurous beer flavors, but fell in love with Sweet Myrtle’s slightly fruity, yet hoppy, flavor and smooth finish. Whether you are an experienced beer drinker, or new to the craft beer game, Upland Brewery’s flights will allow you to try a variety of flavors so that you never miss a chance to try their ever-changing Side Trail Series Beers.

One look at Upland Brewery’s extensive menu, and your mouth is guaranteed to water. From warm soups and fresh salads to hearty burgers and flavorful tofu, Upland has something on its menu that is sure to satisfy any craving.

Not sure where to start? We recommend starting with the Upland Nachos. Crunchy blue corn chips are topped with melted mozzarella and cheddar-Jack cheese, fresh jalapenos, tomatoes, black beans and tomato-Jalapeno salsa to create the largest pile of nachos the Spoon IU team has seen yet. You can add guacamole or sour cream or even spicy chicken, spicy beef, Southwest tofu or pulled pork to your nachos to create the ultimate starter.

If you’re looking for a vegetarian dish or a lighter meal, definitely order the Thai Tofu Salad. Freshly shredded red & napa cabbage is piled high with bell peppers, carrots, edamame and scallions tossed in a Thai Chili Vinagrette. Served with house-made spicy tofu, tomato, sliced cucumber, roasted peanuts and crispy wontons this salad is sure to satisfy the hungry customer. Not a tofu fan? Substitute grilled chicken or sliced turkey for the spicy tofu no problem.

While Upland Brewery’s menu is jam packed with excellent entrees, one of their most popular dishes features 1/2 pound of Buffalo meat, sharp cheddar cheese, apple wood smoked bacon (and drool), Bad Elmer’s Porter Barbecue Sauce, lettuce, tomato, onion and your choice of side. This burger is seriously amazing, and seriously messy, but we wouldn’t trade those barbecue sauce stains on our t-shirts for the world.

One of the best parts about Upland, besides the food and beer, is their spacious outdoor patio, brewery in the back and new inside addition that features a second bar. A much needed second bar since Upland always draws a crowd. The large brewery in the back of the restaurant is separated from the customers by a glass wall so patrons can see exactly where their favorite beer is coming from. Better yet, Upland offers brewery tours at both Bloomington brewery locations.
