The Best First Date Spots in Charlotte, NC

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Queens chapter.

First dates are literal icebreakers, in my experience anyway. You want to get to know someone better, and what better way than to do it over snacks? Snacks are the key to romance, people! Here are the best first date spots in Charlotte, NC.

1. Duck Donuts

This is where my boyfriend and I went on our “first date.” Yes, it was awkward and we really didn’t know each other yet. But the conversation really opened up when we got a dozen of these bad boys. You can mix and match flavors at Duck Donuts, as well as try the ones they have on special. Go for the maple bacon with heaps of bacon on top, reveal your inner Ron Swanson, and let the sparks fly.

2. Brakeman’s Coffee & Supply

Maybe getting food is not your speed just yet—you’re concerned about stuff in your teeth. If the person you’re with actually likes the place you’re going to, or y’all just really enjoy coffee. Located in Matthews, this coffee shop is in a quaint little house on the main stretch of town. Literally something out of a Nicholas Sparks novel, just saying. Plus how can you beat phenomenal lattes and Panthers inspired sodas?

3. The Turnhouse Grille

You must be really interested in this person if you are considering Sunday brunch. I’ve got the place for you! The Turnhouse Grille makes banana bread french toast, gouda cheese infused grits, montecristo sandwiches, shrimp and grits, and so much more. Cozy yet modern atmosphere paired with good food should make for some quality conversation.

4. Popbar Charlotte

Desserts are a surefire way to have a great first date. And hey, if the date doesn’t go well you still had a bomb gelato popsicle. Pick your pop, chocolate dip, and your toppings and stroll through NoDa with your date. P.S. if your date does not like popsicles, I would be skeptical of said person.

5. Lenny Boy Brewing Company

Whether you’re going for beers or booch (kombucha), there’s options for everyone here. Breweries in Charlotte have laid back atmospheres and cool decor, and Lenny Boy does not disappoint. You may be nervous about the first date, so “Dat Pale Ale” or beer in general might qualm those nerves. If all is well and you’re getting snackish, you can always count on a food truck being parked outside the building.

6. Coco and the Director

Maybe you’re really trying to impress this person with your knowledge of cool, hipster coffee spots in Charlotte. If so, Coco and the Director is the place for you. The seating can only be described as stairs with plush pillows everywhere, and there’s nothing like it anywhere else in Charlotte. There is a variety of coffee, tea, and snacks that you can pick your poison with.

7. Tea Fusion Cafe

If you like bubble tea, milk tea, tea in general- this spot has your name all over it. Spark up conversation over colorful, tasty teas. Located in the University area, it has comfy couches and lots of tables to choose from. No matter how good or bad the date goes, this place is a great spot to set up and study at. Hopefully that date goes well so you can bring the person to come study with you! Fingers crossed!

These are great spots for getting to know somebody, hanging out, and enjoying great food. Like I said, if it doesn’t work out you have these spots to fall back on for future date spots. And if it does, you can bring your +1 with you and reminisce about the very place that you got to know each other. Super sappy, but worth it.
