The famous holiday named after St. Valentine is one of the most special days of the year. It's a day of the year I personally think is often overlooked because of the cliches surrounding it. But, really, what other day in the year can you devote to just being romantic?

Valentine’s Day is the one day a year that you can be as corny and affectionate as you want and it’s completely socially acceptable. It’s the day we profess our love toward others by going out on fancy dates and giving gifts that are all in the shape of a heart.

Are you having trouble thinking of what plans to make for February 14th this year? This Valentine’s day, enjoy the sweetest and most romantic sweets with your special someone. After all, who doesn’t love candy, heart shaped desserts, pink drinks and being extra romantic for this special day in the year.

As for college students, or anyone living in the Gainesville area, you might hit a roadblock when thinking about what to do this year on the 14th. There’s so many restaurants in Gainesville it can be hard to narrow down what is the best choice. I’ve narrowed it down to the best local places for a date.

Dunkin' Donuts

Alexis Carson

The Dunkin' Donuts on University Ave has the annual Pink Velvet Macchiato drink back this year. This is a perfect way to start the way with a sweet red velvet flavored coffee.

Krispy Kreme

Maggie Dungey

After you have your coffee, don't forget to pick up these adorable heart shaped donuts. You can find these at the Krispy Kreme located on 13th St. This includes a festive combo of a Valentine's Day breakfast.

Opus Coffee

The cutest lunch spot for a Valentine's date is Opus Coffee. Opus is located right off of campus in Innovation Square. You can choose to sit inside or outside, and they offer so many different drink and smoothie options.

Dragonfly Sushi

Now for a more fancy date, the best spot for dinner in Gainesville is Dragonfly Sushi & Sake Company. Dragonfly is located in Downtown Gainesville. There is more than just sushi on the menu so theres something for everyone to enjoy such as meat, vegetables and seafood.

The Hyppo

After the nice dinner comes dessert. Right across the street from Dragonfly Sushi & Sake Company is The Hyppo. Also located in the heart of downtown Gainesville, The Hyppo is a gourmet ice pops shop. The are ice pops are handmade in St Augustine Florida.

Here you can find really unique flavors of ice pops. Making this the ideal option for dessert in Gainesville on Valentine's Day.

Romantic Wrap-Up

Really, every day can be Valentine’s Day. But if you're looking to go above and beyond and celebrate the holiday to the fullest, try out these spots. It's important to sometimes go out of your comfort zone if that will make someone feel appreciated on this romantic day. Also, pick up the loved themed food if you want a little something extra. Have a happy Valentine's Day with the ones you love!
