Potbelly is Opening in Ames: Here’s What You Need to Know

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at IA State chapter.

Good news Cyclones, Ames is welcoming Iowa’s very first Potbelly sandwich shop on April 26th. Whenever I’ve craved Potbelly in the past, I’ve had to wait until the next family trip near the Chicago area. Unfortunately, it’s unrealistic (and frowned upon) to drive 400 miles solely for a sandwich. But fear no more, everyone near Ames can now enjoy all of Potbelly’s glory within the comfort of our corn-loving state.

What They Offer

Toasty warm sandwiches, hearty salads, hand-dipped shakes, and fresh cookies baked daily; they seem to have all the college necessities covered. Potbelly differentiates themselves by baking each sandwich individually. Need some dessert with that meal? Their freshly baked cookies are fantastic. Although, this by no means makes it okay to skip out on one of their quality chocolate shakes. The shakes come with cookies on the straws. Cute and delicious? That’s a win-win.

What To Order

Potbelly has a variety of tasty sandwich specials that will have you waiting outside the doors on April 26th. If none of these specials catch your eye, they offer the option to build-your-own sandwich for a fool-proof experience.

  • Pizza Sandwich: Pepperoni, meatball, capicola, marinara sauce, provolone cheese, mushrooms and Italian seasoning. Grazie Italy, for this amazing masterpiece you’ve inspired.
  • Peanut Butter and Jelly: Imagine roasted peanuts and sweet fruit, toasted together for an “adulting” version of a PB & J.
  • Grilled Chicken Mediterranean: All natural chicken with feta cheese, hummus, artichoke hearts, crispy cumbers and roasted red bell peppers.
  •  A Wreck: Salami, roast beef, ham, turkey and swiss cheese. Protein with that protein anyone?

Did Someone Say Freaky Fast?

Almost. They may not be as fast as Jimmy Johns, but Potbelly is still able to maintain a timely reputation. Their promise is for the customer to be in and out within 8 minutes. Finally. Another sandwich shop that understands the daily time crunch.

A Brief Hoagie History

Potbelly began as an antique shop in Chicago in the year 1977. A young, clever couple decided to serve lunch to the customers. Almost immediately, the customers began loving the sandwiches far more than the antiques. They’ve kept an antique look of the shops, but have also evolved into one delicious, successful lunch spot. Don’t worry, the antiques have zero effect on the freshness of their food.

Bonus: Secret Menu

Can’t get enough? Well guess what: Potbelly has an additional secret menu to offer us. Secret menu’s may be just a fancy way to tell customers you offer off-menu items, but this menu is foolproof. From Chicken Cordon Bleu to Elvis (featuring peanut butter, banana and bacon), the top secret menu puts all other secret menus to shame.
