Montreal’s Best Coffee Shops for Studying

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at McGill chapter.

Midterms got you down? Can’t take the stifling silence of McGill’s overcrowded, lifeless prisons (ahem, libraries)? Spend a day studying where the Wi-Fi is free, the coffee is good and the freshly baked goods are just a few feet away…

Here are some of Montreal’s best café study spots:

Café Humble Lion

This one is often pretty packed with McGill students for its proximity to campus, great drinks and cool atmosphere. Power outlet access is abundant but seating can be sparse during peak hours. Be sure to try some of the baked goods they offer—especially the brownies.

Kitsuné Espresso Bar

Kitsuné is known for its great drinks, and the crowds definitely reflect that. The bar-style tables fill up quickly on weekends, so arriving earlier in the day is necessary to secure a spot—but the coffee is oh-so-worth it.

This one is more of a bakery than the others on this list—but that just means that the study snacks are that much better. The tables upstairs are a variety of sizes, with some large enough to spread out your textbooks or share with a friend. Beware—the chocolate croissants (especially the “Oh mon Dieu”) are deadly, in the best way. Pro tip: take a number from the dispenser in the vestibule before you enter the bakery to make sure you get served.

Café Santropol

Santropol is a Montreal landmark, known for its cream cheese-slathered sandwiches on thick slices of fresh bread. The “Killer Tomato” sandwich, with cream cheese, sundried tomatoes, basil and garlic spread and fresh tomatoes is a fan favorite. The designated study room at the front of the store (with tons of power outlets) and oasis-like back patio make dreamy study spaces any day.
