Schenectady Green Market Snacks That Will Make Your Mouth Water

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Union chapter.

Have you ever just been sitting in your dorm room wishing you had something to eat that wasn’t ramen? Living in Schenectady, you wouldn’t necessarily think that it would be easy to find locally sourced products, but the Schenectady Green Market has exactly that. With organic treats, local singers, centered right around Jay Street, this farmer’s market is worth the trip, especially since it’s only a five minute walk away.

Each of the stands has its own unique personality, and the people who work there are some of the nicest. The free samples (Yes, you heard correctly, I did say free) of many of the different products makes it easy to find something you’d like to bring back to the dorm.

That weekend homework that you’ve procrastinated about until Sunday afternoon won’t seem nearly as bad if you have some of these snacks to munch on:

Apples from Migliorelli Farms

You can’t go wrong with an apple as brainpower to get through that mid-Sunday homework crunch. The crispy apples from Migliorelli Farms hit the spot. Fuji, Empire, Red Delicious, or any of the enormous variety that Migliorelli brings to Schenectady every Sunday is always a healthy (and yummy) option. I recommend grabbing some honey or peanut butter and dipping away.

Original Lemonade from Café Nola

There is always a long line at the Café Nola stand. Their restaurant is only minutes away from campus on Union Street. If you don’t have the patience to sit through a full meal, their market stand is a great way to taste-test their New Orleans style food, and more importantly their lemonade.

It is crucial that you come to the Café Nola stand extra thirsty because this citrus-packed refreshment is anything but ordinary. Rather than simply putting it in a to-go cup, the ladies behind the counter are known for filling a plastic quart-sized container with their sweet treat. They have a variety of flavors from peach, apple, raspberry, and my personal favorite, blueberry.

Tasty Pastries from Mrs. London’s

A must for your farmer’s market fieldtrip is a pastry from Mrs. London’s Bakery. Mrs. London’s is located in Saratoga and is attached to Max London’s (they have the best brunch). Every time I go to the farmers market, I get a different one of their pastries and I have yet to be disappointed. From the Apple Tart to the Chocolate Croissant, you really can’t go wrong.

#SpoonTip: Get two of whatever looks good to you, so that you can bring it back to your dorm and have it for breakfast on Monday morning. That’s the ultimate way to brighten up your 8 am.

Freddy’s Rockin’ Hummus

TBH this hummus is the perfect snack to keep in your dorm and whip out the minute you get the munchies. From tapenade to hummus, you can’t go wrong with their classic Original Lemon Garlic flavor. You can also be adventurous and try one of their seasonal flavors. Either way, you’ll be sure to be coming back for seconds.

Hi! I'm a senior, Psychology major at Union and I'm a firm believer that cheese and chocolate should be their own food groups. If I'm not writing articles for Spoon, I'm definitely stalking food instas or watching every show on the Food Network.
