A new food trend has taken over Washington DC. This isn’t your average Dunkin’ Donut or ye ole’ Krispy Kreme. Forget the 2009 cupcake trend, it’s 2015 and these doughnut shops are here to stay. The pictures speak for themselves. Check out the list below for the doughnut spots in D.C. everyone and anyone with a sweet tooth must try.
Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken
There’s really no better combination than doughnuts and fried chicken. Astro does an amazing job of hitting that salty highnote then topping it off with the sweet. Famous for their classic vanilla glazed, Astro offers a variety of doughnuts that change monthly and use seasonal ingredients. You’re guaranteed the maple bacon, pb&j, and crème brûlée every time you walk through the door, but check back each month for new, unique flavors. I highly recommended the pb&j doughnut—it’ll take you back to the elementary school Uncrustable days.
Golden Brown Delicious
GBD doesn’t mess around. The doughnut flavors rotate daily—you never know what you’ll come across here, but you’ll always find a mix of traditional, unique and gourmet doughnut flavors. Located in Dupont Circle, GBD is open for the late night diners who need their sweet tooth fix after hours. Like Astro, you can expect to find fried chicken at GBD—but there’s a bit more seating here. They also deliver and offer a bottomless brunch on weekends.
District Doughnut
The last stop on our doughnut tour of DC is a little further from campus, but definitely worth the trek. District Doughnut is all about reinventing the classic American doughnut; they’re made daily without any artificial indigents or flavors. While many of the doughnuts here are crème filed, they offer a wide variety of doughnuts that change every other week. This doughnut joint strives to cater to everyone in The District—they even have gluten free options, my friends!
