A gourmet sandwich market and a potato donut cafe. What do they have in common? All a part of Maine's unique food scene.

Oh Holy Donut

A summer trip to the state of Maine offered up not only scenic views of rugged landscape and lighthouses, but a food experience to take back home. During a visit to Portland, Maine, I came across the much talked about Oh Holy Donut, and for good reason! Mentioned in the New York Times, Bon Appetit, and Elle Magazine, these donuts warrant a trip of their own to Portland's Old Port District. They serve freshly made donuts with a twist. A bite into one will leave your mouth full of a fluffy potato filling. Though initially questionable together, a visit to this place will leave you confirming the potato-donut combination is insanely brilliant! Unique flavors include dark chocolate sea salt, sweet potato (made with real roasted sweet potatoes), or their seasonal chai-glazed. It's fair to say that breakfast was off to a satisfying start.

Cafe Porpoise Kitchen

Driving further south, the coastal town of Kennebunkport, Maine offered a quaint, warm place for foodies to rejoice- The Cafe Porpoise Kitchen was just one of them! After a visit to the local beach, we stopped at a place the town residents claimed had superior sandwiches. Being a bread lover, I naturally had to give this place a try. Expecting a quick bite, we entered with empty stomachs and returned with hands full of their made to order foods.

Their roasted roma tomato, mozzarella, and basil pesto sandwich, as well as their tomato bisque was beyond tasty.

This unseeming cafe offers an assortment of freshly made soups, sandwiches, and includes a gourmet grocery store with imported and domestic products of cheeses and wines.

If you ever stop in one of these two towns, make sure to check both of theses places out! And if you can't make it to the east coast, no need to fret. This recipe from Midwest Living gives you everything you need to make the potato donuts with a coffee glaze at home.

The charm of the place is sometimes found in the unexpectedness of it all.
