There are a lot of things to love about Canada Day – fireworks, drinking, campfires – but nothing is as good as the classic Canadian food. Whether it’s breakfast or a barbecue, here are nine places to get free food on our nation’s birthday.
1. Ottawa

On Canada Day, there’s no better place to score some grub than our capital city. You want McDonald’s coffee and smoothies? St. Albert cheese curds? President’s Choice ice cream? It’s all there for the taking.
2. Toronto

In a city this huge, there’s a lot of celebrating going on. Your best bet is to check out what your riding’s MP is hosting – from Eglinton-Lawrence to Don Valley West, the barbecues are endless.
3. Aurora

If you’ve never visited this small town, now is the time. Stop in for their free pancake breakfast and then go burn some calories in the on-site bouncy castle.
4. Niagara Falls

Can you picture a more beautiful Canada Day than one spent shoving some free cake in your face beside a scenic waterfall?
#SpoonTip: If you’re feeling wild, spend a few nights in a hotel then take a short drive to the States to celebrate July 4th.
5. Huntsville

Instead of going through all of the effort of cutting a cake, Huntsville decided to serve up some perfectly portioned cupcakes. It’s that kind of smart thinking that made Canada the awesome country it is today.
6. New Tecumseth

New Tecumseth is stepping up the free food game by offering not only cake but hot dogs. Dinner and dessert? Yes, please.
7. Barrie

This central city promises a “special” cake from a local bakery. As if that isn’t great enough, Clarabella the Clown is offering up some complementary face painting. #blessed
8. Terrace Bay

Who needs an ocean when you can have cake by the bay instead? I can’t guarantee that you’ll find any watermelons, but there’ll be some free balloons to sweeten the deal.
9. Caledonia

If you like a side of competition with your food, take advantage of the free entry into Caledonia’s jumbo freezie eating contest. All ages are welcome, because the only kind of adulthood we’re here for is the one that includes guzzling flavoured ice.
