6 Evanston Restaurants to Try for Northwestern Family Weekend

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Northwestern chapter.

It’s Northwestern University’s Family Weekend, and you know what that means: Your family will be treating your broke college self to all the fine dining that Evanston has to offer. Maybe you’ve been dying to get your brunch on, but don’t want to risk spending the last $15 in your bank account. Or, maybe you’ve been craving the comforting taste of perfectly-mashed potatoes. Or, maybe you’re just overwhelmed with the many options surrounding campus. Thankfully, I’m here to help. Here are 6 Evanston restaurant options for any mood this family weekend.

If You’re Feeling Fancy: Found Kitchen and Social House

Found is an Evanston gem. Marketed as a social house, the restaurant is known for its untraditional items. Menu highlights include Harissa root vegetables, roasted tomato flat bread, roasted pork chops, and chamomile ice cream sundae. It’s perfect for a fancy dinner with family, and you’ll even forget that you’ve been living off ramen for the past three months.

Similar Options: The Stained Glass, Farmhouse, Boltwood

If You’re Feeling Cheap: Edzo’s Burger Shop

Nothing beats a bomb burger, especially one at a cheap price. Edzo’s menu offers three different burger patties, two vegetarian burger options, sandwiches, a wide variety of hot dogs, and nine (yes, nine) speciality fries options. And to curve your sweet tooth, end your meal with a $5 Nutella milkshake.

Similar Options: Aloha Poké Co.Flat Top Grill

If You’re Feeling Comfort Food: Whiskey Thief Tavern

Nothing says comfort food better than a hearty serving of mashed potatoes. Whiskey Thief does not disappoint with their rosemary smashed potatoes with chicken jus, plus the restaurant’s Brussels sprouts are legendary. Northwestern Family Weekend just wouldn’t be the same without these Brussels Sprouts, trust me.

Similar Options: Lucky Platter, Evanston Chicken Shack, Ten Mile House

If You’re Feeling Sushi: Kansaku Sushi

Northwestern Family Weekend wouldn’t be complete without some freshly-made sushi. This is where Kansaku Sushi comes in. Its modern atmosphere reflects directly onto its menu, which includes both sushi and cooked entrées (in case someone in your family isn’t a huge sushi fan). Get the Carnival Maki, you won’t be sorry.

More Options: Koi, Todoroki

If You’re Feeling Healthy: Viet Nom Nom

Founded by a Northwestern Kellogg student, Viet Nom Nom is affordable, healthy, vegan/gluten free friendly and delicious. The menu is small, but incredibly successful. Choose between Bahn Min (Vietnamese sandwich), Pho, Summer Rolls, Peanut Pasta, and Vermicelli Salad. All have vegetarian or meat options, and most can come gluten free. Their Vietnamese Iced coffee is a guaranteed must-try.

Similar Options: Blind Faith Cafe, Peeled Juice Bar

If You’re Feeling Brunch: Cupitol

Brunch: every college students favorite meal. Cupitol will exceed all brunch expectations. Its menu includes omelets, flavored french toast (this fall’s menu features a pumpkin spiced french toast), and a wide variety of baked goods. Plus, they have some of the tastiest chai in Evanston and hangover juice in case your Friday night didn’t go as planned.

More Options: Z Breakfast Club, La Macchina Cafe, Bangers & Lace

Don’t miss out on kicking those food cravings this Northwestern Family weekend. Evanston has so much great food to offer. Whether you’re craving soup, a juicy burger, or french toast, Evanston has it all. Take advantage of your family being around and try a new place, they’ll love the company and the food.
